Topic: Writer’s Skill

Lesson Title: The Journey Reading Comprehension

Instructional Hours Duration 30 Level: Intermediate

Lesson Objectives Learners will be able to:

1. Differentiate between literal/explicit and connotative/implicit meaning.


2. Identify explicit and implicit meanings of words and phrases from a given
paragraph.
3. Select three powerful or unusual words in each paragraph for an understanding of
ways in which the language is effective.

Warm Up:
1) Give Ss a few sentences on the slides and ask them to differentiate them
2) Explain the meaning of explicit and implicit as well as the task for the day

Activity Lead in:


1) Ss Watch the movie trailer Hunger games: Mockingjay movie
and list down the explicit information presented in the trailer.
2) After the trailer, give ss additional minutes to quietly fill in any extra explicit
information
3) Then ask ss to brainstorm any implicit information in the trailer.
4) After jotting down the explicit and implicit information, ss discuss their information
in small groups of 3 or 4. Then they make inferences about the movie based on
the explicit and implicit information they gather from the trailer. The group dynamic
is great for sparkling additional ideas.
5) After that, reconvened as a class and share their ideas. Next, show the topic for
today: The Journey reading passage.

Main Task:
1) Ask students about what they understand from the topic (The Journey) before
reading the passage, then ask them to scan for main ideas (Explicit info). This can
be done from each paragraph’s main idea (Literal/Explicit). This will be done by
dividing into groups so they will vary. Ask Ss to list down as mentioned above.
2) Ask SS to find the implicit meaning from each paragraph. After that, explain to SS
how to find those two (explicit and implicit) ideas from the passage.
3) Show them examples of both in each paragraph and the words or style of writing

used, in this case imagery or personification.
4) Show them the pyramid of explicit/implicit/inferences diagram to summarize the
learning process that have been taught.

Explain how the writer uses language to convey meaning and to create effect in these
paragraphs. Choose three examples of words or phrases from each paragraph to support
your answer. Your choices should include the use of imagery. Write about 200 to 300
words.
