Proving Two Triangles Congruent using SAS and ASA Postulates

Name: ___________________________________________ Section: ____________________

School: __________________________________________ Date: _______________________

Teacher: _________________________________________ Score: ______________________

Learning Competency:

1. Proves two triangles are congruent. (M8GE-IIIg-1)

1.1. proves two triangles are congruent using SAS and ASA Postulates
1.2. apply the concept of triangle congruence to real-life situations

Key Concepts

SAS Postulate: If two sides and the included angle of one triangle are congruent
to the corresponding parts of another triangle, then the triangles are congruent.

If SI ≅ EY, ∠I ≅ ∠Y and MI ≅ LY,

Y then ΔSIM ≅ ΔLYE by SAS
Postulate.

Included angle is the angle formed by two given sides. In the diagram, ∠ I is the
included angle of sides SI and MI while ∠ Y is the included angle of sides LY
and EY .

ASA Postulate: If two angles and the included side of one triangle are
congruent to the corresponding parts of another triangle, then the
triangles are congruent.

Y If ∠ I ≅∠ Y , SI ≅ EY and ∠ S ≅ ∠ E ,
then ΔSIM ≅ ΔLYE by ASA Postulate.

1
Included side is the side formed by two given angles. In the diagram, SI is the
included side of angles ∠ S and ∠ I while EY is the include side of angles ∠ E
and ∠ Y .

4. ΔMYA ≅ ΔRGE ASA Postulate

Example 3. Let us find out how we can apply the Congruence Postulates to
prove that two triangles are congruent. Study the examples below:

Given: MA ≅ TA , ∠ MAH ≅ ∠TAH

Prove: ΔMAH ≅ ΔTAH

Solution: Proof
Statement Reason
1. MA ≅ TA 1. Given
2. ∠ MAH ≅ ∠TAH 2. Given
3. AH ≅ AH 3. Reflexive Property
4. ΔMAH ≅ ΔTAH 4. SAS Postulate

Example 4
Given: R is the midpoint of MY and ∠ EMR ≅ ∠ CYR
Prove: ΔERM ≅ ΔCRY

Solution: Proof
Statement Reason
1. ∠ EMR ≅ ∠ CYR 1. Given
2. R is the midpoint of MY 2. Given

3. MR ≅ YR 3. Definition of a Midpoint

4. ∠ ERM ≅ ∠CRY 4. Vertical Angle Theorem

5. ΔERM ≅ ΔCRY 5. ASA Postulate

Reflection: (Journal Writing)

In a Mathematics Fair, one of the activities is a field study in which you will
report on an inquiry about an important concept in Mathematics. Suppose you are
one of the delegates and you are asked to make a report on: How the concept of
triangle congruence is applied in real life, most especially in this time of COVID-19.
How will you do it? But since we cannot conduct a symposium, write your report in
your journal.
