3 Geometric Sequences (Page 87)


• A geometric sequence has a common ratio between consecutive
terms.
• If 𝑢𝑛 is the nth term and 𝑢𝑛+1 is the (n+1)th term, then
𝑢𝑛+1
= 𝑟 = common ratio, for 𝑛 = 1,2,3, … .

• If a is the first term, the geometric sequence is of the form:
𝑎, 𝑎𝑟, 𝑎𝑟 2 , 𝑎𝑟 3 , … .
• The formula for the nth term of a geometric sequence is

𝑢𝑛 = 𝑎𝑟 𝑛−1

Example 8 (Page 88)


(a) Given: geometric sequence 3, 6, 12, 24, …
To find: 10th term and nth term
𝑎 = 3, 𝑟 = 2
𝑢10 = 𝑎𝑟 9 = 3 × 29 = 1536
𝑢𝑛 = 𝑎𝑟 𝑛 − 1 = 3 × 2𝑛 − 1

(b) Given: geometric sequence 40, −20, 10, −5, …


To find: 10th term and nth term

𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 − 18 = 0
(𝑥 − 6)(𝑥 + 3) = 0
𝑥 = 6 or 𝑥 = −3 (reject it)

The geometric sequence is 3, 6, 12, …
𝑎 = 3, 𝑟 = 2
𝑢10 = 𝑎𝑟 9 = 3 × 29 = 1536
