CHEMISTRY PAPER 1

(THEORY)

Maximum Marks: 70
Time Allowed: Three hours
(Candidates are allowed additional 15 minutes for only reading the paper.
They must NOT start writing during this time).

This paper is divided into four sections – A, B, C and D.
Answer all questions.
Section A consists of one question having sub-parts of one mark each.
Section B consists of ten questions of two marks each.
Section C consists of seven questions of three marks each, and
Section D consists of three questions of five marks each.
Internal choices have been provided in one question each in Section B,
Section C and Section D.
All working, including rough work, should be done on the same sheet as, and
adjacent to the rest of the answer.
The intended marks for questions or parts of questions are given in brackets [ ].
Balanced equations must be given wherever possible and diagrams where they
are helpful.
When solving numerical problems, all essential working must be shown.
In working out problems, use the following data:
Gas constant R = 1987 cal deg-1 mol-1 = 8314 JK-1 mol-1
= 00821 dm3 atm K-1mol-1
1 l atm = 1 dm3 atm = 1013 J. 1 Faraday = 96500 coulombs.
Avogadro’s number = 6023  1023.

Kf = 1·86 K kg mol-1 respectively.

SECTION C – 21 MARKS

Question 12 [3]

The rate constant for a first order reaction becomes six times when the temperature is
increased from 350 K to 410 K. Calculate activation energy (Ea) for the reaction.

Question 13 [3]

An organic compound ‘A’ on treatment with aq.KCN produces compound ‘B’.


Compound ‘B’ on reduction with Na/C2H5OH gives compound ‘C’ with molecular
formula C2H7N. Compound ‘C’ reacts with NaNO2 and HCl to form compound ‘D’.
Compound ‘D’ on treatment with acetic acid in presence of conc. H2SO4 produces a sweet
smelling compound ‘E’.

(i) Identify the compounds ‘A’ to ‘E’.

(ii) Name the reaction for the formation of compound ‘E’ from compound ‘D’.

(i) A 0·06 molar CH3COOH solution offers a resistance of 55 ohms to a conductivity


cell at 25oC. If the cell constant is 0·45cm-1 and the molar conductance of
CH3COOH at infinite dilution is 398·5 ohm-1cm2mol-1. Calculate:

(a) Specific conductance

(b) Molar conductance

(c) Degree of dissociation

(ii) Calculate the number of coulombs of charge required to deposit 24·35g of


aluminium from a solution containing Al3+ ions.

OR

(i) Write the Nernst equation for the cell reaction given below and calculate the emf
of the cell at 298K.

240 ohm-1cm2mol-1 and 129 ohm-1cm2mol-1 respectively.
