The Impact of Media on Society

F. Malaki
Over the last decade the influence of media on society has grown rapidly,
especially with the advance of technology. We are not only dealing with traditional media
be it print; newspapers, magazines, or broadcasted such as radio and television. We are
also dealing with a new kind of media namely digital media which includes social media.
This paper will examine the impact of media, both traditional and new media, on our
society. I will first start by a brief definition of media and society. Then I will try to explore
the impact of media on society by providing several examples. Herbert Marshall McLuhan
suggests that the media instead of the content that they carry should be the focus of the
study. He believes that the medium is the message. He also proposes that the medium
affects the society in which it plays a role not by the content delivered through it, but by
the characteristics of the medium. However, some theorists have attacked McLuhan’s
definition for being too simplistic. Umberto Eco asserts that McLuhan’s medium conflates
channels, codes, and messages under the overarching term of the medium, confusing
the vehicle, internal code, and content of a given message in his framework.
On the other hand, Emile Durkheim the founding father of the modern sociology
treated society as a reality in its own right. According to Talcott Parsons Society is a total
complex of human relationships in so far as they grow out of the action in terms of means-
end relationship intrinsic or symbolic. Morris Ginsberg defines society as a collection of
individuals united by certain relations or modes of behaviour which mark them off from
others who do not enter into these relations or who differ from them in behaviour. Graeme
Burton, the writer of the book Media and Society, does not really subscribe to pessimistic
opinions about the influence of media on society. Nor does he go along with what he
regards as over-optimistic views about audience autonomy and power. Lately, I believe
that we can probably talk about the power of an audience since there are different sources

1
of information and the audience can also react to any piece of information. But still the
power of the audience remains relative because the media owners select what to deliver
when and how, that is why we cannot talk about audience autonomy either.
Burton states that the media industries are meaning producers. All acts of
communication produce meanings. It is the power of these meanings, what we do with
them, that shapes relationships, exercises influence, models reality, generates
behaviours of domination and feelings of subordination. It is indeed true media does
produce meaning, but these meanings imply intended beliefs, discourses, ideologies, etc.
The audience should take these previous things into consideration and be aware of what
they are exposed to every day, so that they can look at things from different perspectives
and not just from the perspective of a medium. The consumption of everything media
produces will certainly affect the audience either positively or negatively. If we look for the
causes of children’s violence we will figure out that their exposure to various kinds of
media such as violent cartoons and video games are the main causes. Potter assumes
that violent portrayals are pervasive in the media, especially the most dominant medium,
television.
We know that people use the cues in the portrayal of violence to construct
meaning. Scholars strongly agree that exposure to media violence leads to negative
effects both immediately during exposure and over the long term of continuous exposure.
We also know that certain types of portrayals of violence, certain types of viewers, and
certain environments increase the probability of the negative effects. Moreover, Gunter
states that TV viewers judged the severity of violence according to 6 factors; The physical
nature perpetrated, the kind of weapon used, the degree of harm done to the victim, the
nature of physical context in which the violence takes place, the realism for the sitting for
the violence, and societal norms. Media violence can also have a long term or short-term
effect on both children and adults. Furthermore, most women do like to take good care
about their appearances so media producers have devoted various magazines dealing
exclusively with women issues. For instance, in Morocco we have several women’s
magazines; Femme du Maroc, Citadine, Lalla Fatima and others.
All these magazines present issues that will meet the interests of the
contemporary Moroccan women mainly health, fashion, featuring beauty, sex, cooking
and sometimes professional career. We should not forget the celebrity’s news which is
usually at the core of each magazine. According to Graeme Women’s magazines assume
that women exist as a coherent readership. Which is actually just a stereotype reinforced
by all means of media. They are reducing various different women in a given society into
one model produced by the media industry, and they are convincing their readership
implicitly that here is the model that you all should follow. As a conclusion, the media is a
powerful tool in society; it has several functions it can instruct and educate as it can
manipulate and shape the public opinion. For this reason, the audience should be media
literate or at least they should be conscious of what they are consuming and then select
what they receive. It is obvious that we cannot do without media with all its forms
especially in the current time because it becomes a part of our daily life.
