Assignment for Open Channel Hydraulics

Assignment No=3

Part I: Class workout Assignments

1. A trapezoidal channel has a bottom width of 2.5mand depth of flow of 0.80m. The side
slopes of 1.5H:1V and The channel is lined with bricks (s= 3.0mm). If the longitudinal slope
of the channel is 0.0003 estimate
a. The average shear stress
b. The hydrodynamic nature of the surface
c. Chezy coefficient (c)
d. Manning’s coefficient (n)
e. The uniform flow discharge for the case c and d
2. For rectangular section channel of width 10m calculate normal flow depth and critical flow
depth if discharge is 80m3/sec, channel slope of 0.0015 and manning’s 0.03.
3. A trapezoidal channel of 4.0m bed-width and side slope of 1.5H:1V has a sand bed
(n=0.025). At a certain reach the sides are lined by smooth concrete (n=0.012). Calculate the
equivalent roughness of the reach if the depth of flow is 1.5m. using
a. Horton’s formula
b. Pavloskii
c. Yen
d. Compare the difference and justify why
4. A deep and narrow natural channel section carries a discharge of 20m3/sec. calculate the
average width and normal depth if n=0.02 and So =0.0001.
5. A standardized lined triangular cannel section has a side slope of 1.75H:1V and laid on a
longitudinal slope of 0.0004. The manning’s n is found to be 0.016. If the channel is designed
to convey the fully supply discharge at a velocity of 1.5m/sec. Estimate
a. The fully supply discharge
b. Fully supply depth
6. Design the trapezoidal channel as best hydraulic cross-section with Q= 10 m3/sec, n= 0.014,
S0= 0.0004, and m= 3/2.
