12 sessions
Session 1: In this session, we divided ourselves into teams and chose the members who we
wanted to work with. I teamed up with Annabelle, Pola, Eloise, Paulina S., and Hyejoo. In
this session, we listened to various different African Music in order to familiarise ourselves
with the music for the dance. It was fun for us to listen to the different, unique, and foreign
beats and rhythms.
Session 2: In Session 2, we spent half of the session choosing the songs on Spotify and
finalised on Party with a Jagaban as our dance music. Afterwards, we watched videos to look
at most common and popular African dance movements. We spent the last 10 minutes
creating our 20 second Introduction where we created a ‘flower blooming’ movement
where we surround Annabelle and open our arms out to “bloom”. I found this session very
productive and fun.
Session 3: during today’s session, many people were unable to attend in class as we had all
gotten Coronavirus from Prom. During this session, we were not able to get much done and
so we further researched different African dance movements.
Session 4: I was not able to attend school as I had caught coronavirus along with many other
people except Hyejoo so nothing happened in this session.
Session 5: Eloise, Paulina, and Pola were still feeling ill so it was just me, Hyejoo, and
Annabelle. During this, we worked on the first minute of the song. We were able to create
around 14 dance moves in total for the verse and the chorus. Although half of our group
was missing we worked very well together and was very productive and created most of the
main dance moves.
Session 6 and 7 and 8: As everyone came back, we slowly taught all of the choreographies
we made up and took it step by step. Although some of the movements were a little
challenging some people we worked together and worked hard and was able to successfully
carry out a little bit of the movements. Once all the movements were taught, we continued
Practicing the movements over and over to perfect it.
Session 9: we then worked on two more movements where we move in unison and a
domino effect and after worked individually to create 16 beats of our solo performances.
We all collectively decided to do 8 beats per person first and afterwards go in a backwards
order of doing another 8 beats each.
Session 10: We worked together for the first half of the session on our plan that we had to
submit. We all brainstormed and research the names of the movements and thought of the
adjectives to describe the movements most accurately. Afterwards, we worked together on
filming a practice video of the progress we had made so far and uploaded it on our Teams
chat to practice at home.
Session 11: We continued practicing from the chorus with our solo performances and then
the movements after which included another formation in line and doing simple movements
to move back into our chorus. Afterwards, we continued practicing and repeating the
challenging moves and continued did several run throughs in order to perfect our dance. All
of us gave input to the choreography making process and although it was challenging, we
persevered and worked hard together in teamwork.
Session 12: During this session, we refreshed ourselves on what the moves were and put a
little more attention to detail with unison movements and the steps we created to really
perfect the dance. Afterwards, we filmed our final piece without Hyejoo and decided to
make another video with Hyejoo later in the week. I think that we all worked very hard and
our moves were unique and very intricate. However, it could be even better if we had more
excitement and eagerness showing through our dance moves and smiling more often
throughout the performances as we were very focused on remembering the moves that
many of us forgot to smile.§
