❖ Explains the process of one-way communication , whereby a sender

transmits a message and a receiver absorbs it.

❖ Speaker ❖ Television
Broadcast
❖ Sending a Memo/Mail

A source will encode a

message, or take an idea and
give it meaning through words
, and send it to a receiver
through a channel , or the
medium which a message is
delivered such as:
❖ A phone call ❖ A computer
❖ A hand written note ❖ Or even
face-to-face

The communication being put out happens in a straight line,

coming from the sender to a receiver.
Many things can affect the one-way communication process. For instance, the
choice of channel selected may affect the way a receiver interprets a message. Also
a number of disruptions can occur at any point. These noises are:

❖ Psychological Noise ❖ Physical Noise

❖ Physi
ological
Noise

In marketing for example , it helps to focus on
how an advertising message may be altered and
influenced by the encoding process of the
bussiness , the effects of communication channel
or medium , noise interference and eventual
decoding by the potential customer.
A major disadvantage of the linear model is that often this model
can isolate people who should be involved from the line of
communication . As a result they may miss out on vital information
and the opportunity to contibute ideas.

“I’m a great believer that any tool that enhances communication

has profound effects in terms of how people can learn from each
other, and how they can achieve the kind of freedoms that
they’re interested in.” – Bill Gates
(Sender)

(Message) (medium) (receiver)

(feedback)
It has a 5 Components

Which is used as an analysis tool for evaluating the

communication process.

This components are the questions to be asked to get the

answers and keep communication going.
❖ Control analysis
❖ Content analysis
❖ Media analysis
❖ Audience
❖ Effect Analysis

This model is develop to analyze mass communication , this

model is used for interpersonal communication or group
communication to be disseminated message to various
situation.
The major criticisms of Lasswell Model is that
it does not include feedback and it ignores the
possibility of noise. Without feedback , a
communication process can not be fruitful.
Lasswell’s model is very linear and does not
considers barriers in the communication process.
Aristotle Model is mainly focused on speaker and
speech . It can be broadly divided into 5 primary
elements : Speaker, Speech , Occasion, Audience, and
Effect.

The Aristotle’s communication model is a speaker

centered model as the speaker has the most
important role in it and is the only one active .
The speaker must prepare his speech and
analysis audience needs before he enters into the
stage. His words should influence in audience
mind and persuade their thoughts towards
him.
Alexander gave a brave speech to
his soldiers in the war field to
defeat Persian Empire.
In 1960, David Berlo postulated Berlo’s
Sender-Message-Channel – Receiver (SMCR) model of
communication (1949).
He described factors affecting the individual components
in the communication making more efficient.
Focuses on encoding and decoding which happens before
sender sends the message and before the receiver
receives the message respectively.
There is no concept of noise or any kind
of barriers in communication process.

It is a linear model of communication, there is no two way

communiction.

Both of people must be similar aaccording to all the factors

mentioned above.
Is the source of the message or the person who originates the message. The
following are the factor related to sender and is also the same in the case of
receiver.
A factor that affects the communication process. If the sender has good communication
skills, the message will be communicated better but if it’s not good. Similarly, if the
receiver can’t grasp the message , then the communication will not be effective.

It includes the skills to speak , present, read, write, listening, etc.

The attitude of sender and
the receiver creates the
effect of the message . The
person’s attituude towards
self, the receiver and the
environment changes the
meaning and effect of the
message.
Famialiarity with the subject of
the message makes the
communicated message have its
effect more. Knowledge on the
subject matter makes the
communicator send the message
effectively.
Values, beliefs, laws, rules, religion, and many other
social factors affect the sender’s way of communicating
the message. It creates difference in the generation of
message . Place and situation also fall under social
systems .
A message is the substance that is being sent by the sender to the
receiver . It might be in the form of :

❖ Voice
❖ Audio
❖ Text

❖ Video
Content is the thing in the message. The whole message from the beginning to
end is the content.

Elements are the non-verbal things that tag along with the content
like gestures, signs , language, etc.

Treatment is the way in which the message is conveyed to the receiver . It also
effects the feedback of the receiver.
The structure of the message or the way it has been
structured or arranged, affects the effectiveness of the
message.

Code is the form in which the message is sent. It might

be in a form of language, text, video, etc.
Medium used to send the message . In mass
communication and other forms of communication ,
technical machines might be used as a channel like:
We receive the message through hearing

We perceive through seeing. We also get non –verbal message by seeing.

Many of the non-verbal communication happens from touching like holding hands.
We collect information
also from smelling.

Taste also provides the

information to be sent
as a message.
