LABORATORY ACTIVITY #4
THE TISSUES

I. Desired learning outcomes

Tissues are groups of similar cells that combine with other tissues to form organs. There are
four basic tissue types: epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue and nervous tissue which
have distinct structures, patterns, and function. Each of these categories includes several
subcategories based on differences in structure and function.

After performing this activity, students should be able to:

a. list the general structural characteristics, functions and locations of the different tissues of the
body; and
b. identify the different subcategories/subtypes of the tissues when presented with a slide or
diagram.

II. Material
1. Prepared slides (simple squamous, stratified squamous, cuboidal, columnar, pseudostratified
ciliated columnar, transitional, areolar, adipose, fibrous, reticular, hyaline cartilage, elastic
cartilage, fibrocartilage, bone, blood, skeletal muscle, smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, nervous
tissue)
2. Microscope

III. Procedures
1. Obtain prepared slides and microscope.
2. Examine the slides.
3. Record your observations.

III. Guide Questions

1. On what basis are epithelial tissues classified?

2. How are the functions of the connective tissue reflected in its structure?

3. In what ways are nerve cells similar with other cells? How are they different?
