We are hosting a group of American University students who will be visiting our campus; hence we are listing down the positive and negative aspects which they need to consider communicating effectively and efficiently with students and faculties. For this first, we ourselves should be well aware of our institutions ethnic diversity and cultures to help the group of American university students. Generally all of us are more comfortable with familiar people and surrounding. But because every Indian is imbibed with the culture of Atithi Devo Bhava, we warmly welcome people.

Some problems they might face are:

1. They would face problem of atmospheric and surrounding changes i.e. temperature change, humidity, dust and pollution, noise, traffic. 2. Finding accommodation with good ambience and facilities. 3. May face health problems due to atmospheric changes, drinking water and food. 4. Dietary habit issues. E.g. these students may find it difficult to get non vegetarian food in college campus; even they consume lots of salads which again may not be available here.
5. Dressing pattern may change according to the atmosphere.

E.g. how much skin to be exposed? 6. Non verbal behaviour changes as in country to country.

E.g. giving a hug for greeting can be their culture but here, it may be taken in a negative sense.
7. They will be unaware of the college premises, about parking facility, lift

facility and different college personals responsible for different activities, sitting arrangement in class. 8. They start their day early may it be going to college or work, so our college timings i.e. 10:30 to 4:00 pm may be a problem for them. 9. Teaching style of faculties may vary as in emphasise on practical exposure and industry visit is not stressed upon. 10. Broad minded behaviour and attitude of American students may create a hindrance for them. 11. Rules and regulatory pattern of GLS institution will vary from their college regulations. E.g. Usage of internet during sessions is strictly prohibited. 12. Usage of language may create a hindrance for them. E.g. Faculties may use local language between lectures. All students are not comfortable with English and especially their accent. Mockery of their accent and behaviour. 13. Local shopkeepers, auto and taxi drivers hike their charges if they have a foreign customer. 14. Behavioural aspects as to mannerisms can create a problem. E.g. Calling faculties by their first name may be taken offensively.

Important behavioural rules and aspects they need to consider are:

1. A presentation and video on our college campus, faculties, cultural heritage,

roads, traffic, and transportation facility can be sent to the American students so that they get a feel of our culture and ethnic diversities.
2. To get them imbibed in our culture and to make them more aware of Indian

traditions, we can invite them to stay at our residence with our family. This way, they will come to know about our timings, food, mannerisms, religion and vice-a-versa which will benefit both of us to know more about each others culture and in turn start respecting it. E.g. organisation like AIESEC and Rotary Club conduct the above mentioned activity. 3. The students should be made aware of the perception of dressing in India, especially in Gujarat. E.g. how much skin can be exposed in both formal and informal situation? 4. Being at a post graduation level, faculties and students are broad minded which will help American students blend along with people around them at campus.
5. We can distribute reception booklet to American students when they reach the

campus which will contain Ahmadabad map, important emergency numbers, must visit places, GLS campus map, photos of faculties along with a small introduction which will help them know about our campus and faculties in advance.
6. Every American student can be provided a representative student from the

institute, a buddy who will help them in all circumstances.

E.g. commutation, guiding them in mannerisms during sessions and public places, bringing food as per their requirement.
7. They can be provided 10 minutes break between every sessions.

E.g. they can have coffee or tea, light refreshments. 8. They can be each given a translation book so that they are comfortable in communicating with localities. 9. An informal meeting, like a picnic can be arranged where all the students and faculties can be invited, so that American students are more comfortable with us and vice-a-versa. 10. An industrial visit can be arranged where they get to know about Indian corporate environment and a visit to NGO can be arranged. E.g. blind people association, old age home and orphanage.

After taking into consideration all the problems that can be faced by American University students after analysing them virtually, the above mentioned suggestions can be taken for the behavioural rules which will help them for a comfortable and knowledgeable stay.
