Lesson Idea Name: Life Cycle of a Butterfly

Grade Level/Content Area: 2nd Grade Science

Content Standard Addressed: S2L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the life cycles of
different living organisms. a. Ask questions to determine the sequence of the life cycle of common animals in
your area: a mammal such as a cat, dog or classroom pet, a bird such as a chicken, an amphibian such as a
frog, and an insect such as a butterfly.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and be
1a: Students will articulate and set personal goals, able to do by the end of this lesson: Students
develop strategies to leverage technology to achieve should be able to explain the sequence of the life
them, and reflect on the learning process itself to cycle of a butterfly and ask questions to
improve learning outcomes. determine the sequence of life with other
familiar animals.

What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea? Students should be able to explain what
the order of stages is for the life of a butterfly.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

X Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by
teacher direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems
and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the
school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation: Each student will be at a computer, with the Padlet open. They will be
instructed to move through the Padlet, one step at a time. The teacher will be moving through the
class to help guide students, ensure they are on task and answer questions the students may have.

The teacher will let the students know the topic of what they are learning about. The students will
start with the hook of the lesson and answer a simple question to get them thinking about the life of
a butterfly. They will then watch a BrainPOP to learn about the life cycle and then complete and
online simulation. They will then complete the next tasks on the Padlet and then complete the
Kahoot! At the end of the lesson to assess what they have learned.

Managing student learning: The students will be active learners during this lesson because they will
be working through each item on their own pace, and they will be able to choose to use voice, video
or typed responses. The students will be able to stop and assess what they have learned throughout
the lesson, due to the various check points that go back to what was learned in the original video.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Students will be actively engaged in this lesson by the various
ways they will be checked for comprehension and learning the content itself. The lesson involves
drawing, using a simulation and watching a video, which appeals to different types of learners.
Reflective Practice: This tool will support learners because it is easy to follow, and students can
check back to other content if they get stuck on one section. I believe the most impactful part of the
lesson will be when students create their own butterfly life cycle and get to record audio. Explaining
it.
