WEEK 3

At the end of the lesson the student must be able


to:
vDiscuss the practice of medical technology as to
nature of the profession in relation to detection
and diagnosis of diseases.
vExplain the practice of medical technology.
vDifferentiate the medical technology practice
from other laboratory personnel such as
laboratory technicians, pathologists and alike.

§ Designed to the DETECTION, DIAGNOSIS,
TREATMENT and MONITORING of disease.

§ Perform these laboratory test that are involved in the


examination and analysis of body fluids, tissue and
cells.
§ Look for the presence of bacteria, parasites and opther
microorganism in the body
§ Analyze chemical contents of fluids, match blood for
transfusions, and test for drug levels in the blood to
show patients reaction to the treatment
§ Practice of Medical Technology - A person shall be deemed to be in
the practice of medical technology within the meaning of this Act,
who shall for a fee, salary or other compensation or reward paid or
given directly or indirectly through another, renders any of the
following professional services for the purpose of aiding the
physician in diagnosis, study and treatment of diseases and in the
promotion of health in general:
§ Examination of tissues, secretions and excretions of the human body and body
fluids by various electronic, chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic, hematologic,
serologic, immunologic, nuclear, and other laboratory procedures and techniques
either manual or automated;
§ Blood banking procedures and techniques;
§ Parasitologic, Mycologic and Microbiologic procedures and techniques;

§ Histopathologic and Cytotechnology; provided that nothing in this paragraph shall


inhibit a duly registered medical laboratory technician from performing
histopathologic techniques and procedures.
§ Clinical research involving patients or human beings requiring the use of and/or
application of medical technology knowledge and procedures;
§ Preparations and standardization of reagents, standards, stains and others,
provided such reagents, standards, stains and others are exclusively for the use of
their laboratory;
§ Clinical laboratory quality control;
§ Collection and preservation of specimens;
§ Perform Clinical Laboratory Testing
§ Perform Special Procedures
§ Ensure Accuracy and Precision of Results

§ Be honest in Practice
§ Ensure Timely Delivery of results

§ Demonstrate Professionalism
§ Uphold Confidentiality
§ Collaborate with other Health Care Professionals

§ Conduct Research

Pathologist
v A duly registered physician who is specially
trained in methods of laboratory medicine,
or the gross and microscopic study and
interpretation of tissues, secretion and
excretions of the human body and its
functions in order to diagnose disease,
follow its course, determine the effectivity of
treatment, ascertain cause of death and
advance medicine by means of research.
Medical Laboratory Technicians
v A person certified and registered
with the Board as qualified to assist
a medical technologist and/or
qualified pathologist in the
practice of medical technology as
defined in this Act.
PHLEBOTOMIST
vTrained to draw blood wither
for laboratory testing or for
blood donation
CYTOTECHNOLOGIST
vLab professionals who evaluate patients'
cell samples and are trained to notice
subtle changes to accurately detect
precancerous, malignant, and infectious
conditions.
vCytotechnologists usually work closely
with a pathologist.
HISTOTECHNOLOGIST
vmembers of a laboratory team who
employ histologic technology to
diagnose diseases, conduct
research, or instruct others in the
science.
vA histotechnologist will prepare
very thin slices of human, animal or
plant tissue for microscopic
examination.
NUCLEAR MEDICAL
TECHNOLOGIST
v Prepare radioactive drugs and
administer them to patients for
imaging or treatment. They provide
technical support to physicians or
others who diagnose, care for, and
treat patients and to researchers
who investigate uses of radioactive
drugs.
TOXICOLOGIST
v A toxicologist is a scientist who has a strong
understanding of many scientific disciplines,
such as biology and chemistry, and typically
works with chemicals and other substances to
determine if they are toxic or harmful to
humans and other living organisms or the
environment.
§ a baccalaureate degree program from a
college or university recognized by
CHED, completed a specified clinical
internship in a training laboratory
by the Bureau of health facilities and DOH
§ Passed the licensure examination
administered by the
Board of Medical Technology of the
