Your success in this exploratory course on Hairdressing is shown in your ability to perform
the performance standards found in learning outcome.

Basic Face Shapes: Knowing Your Shape and Choosing the Right Style
Have you ever considered your face shape when choosing a cut or style? Your face shape can
significantly change how certain hairstyles look on you. There are 7 basic face shapes and certain
styles flatter each one! Here’s the detail about each basic face shape and what you might need to
consider when choosing a new look. The 7 basic face shapes are oval, round, square, diamond, heart,
pear and oblong.
Oval
The oval face shape is longer than wide, with a jaw that is narrower than the cheekbones. Because
the oval shaped face is so proportional, this face shape looks good with about any hair style. Any
length of cut looks great. Add layers near the cheekbones, lips, or chin to accentuate that feature.
For women:
For oval-faced ladies who like short hair, a blunt bob or
lob with subtle layers will look particularly chic. If you
prefer long hair, on the other hand, opt for minimal layers
or style your hair with waves or curls to keep it from
dragging down your face. You can also use your natural
hair part to help guide you in your hairstyle choice.
For men:
A conservative quiff works well, but there is also a lot of room to
experiment with longer lengths and modernized cuts. Your face shape can
handle a voluminous pompadour or even longer, fuller rocker-esque
shoulder-length hair. Oval face shapes also work well with a buzz cut and
a shaved head.

Round
The round face shape is characterized by a wide hairline and fullness below the cheekbones. These
face shapes look great with longer hair that lengthens the face. Long layers are the most flattering for
this face shape, where short layers can accentuate the roundness of the face. Side swept bangs can
also add length to a round face.
For women:
A long layered cuts and choppy pixie cuts tend to look best.
If opting for a layered cut, choose long, staggered layers that
start around the jawline. You may also want to add a short
side fringe that finishes at the eye to help lengthen your face.
If you’re wondering what to avoid, steer clear of bobs and
single-length cuts along with short layers, which can balloon around your face, and full curls, which
can also enhance the appearance of roundness.
For men:
A pompadour or quiff will do just that, working to create more dimension
and giving your baby face a more pronounced look. Note that a side
part will also create more angles and give you a more mature look.
Square
The square face shape is characterized by a wide hairline and jawline. The square shaped face need
height on top and narrowness at the sides. Deep side parts, texture, and soft bangs helps balance the
square face shape. Longer length looks great with their more angular and powerful jawline. This face
shape should avoid straight lines.
For women:
For a look that complements your bone structure, consider
a side-parted style, which will offset the squareness. Long
and airy layers can also be flattering and will help to disguise
the sharp angles of your face. If you like a cropped length,
consider a short, layered bob. But, remember to add side-
swept bangs, which will draw attention to your cheekbones instead of your jawline.
For men:
It is recommend opting for an undercut, which will make the most of your
distinctive features. As this face shape is versatile with different types of
hair, don’t be afraid to experiment with other lengths and styles. We
recommend a lot of volume when styling your hair, so focus on fullness
and add as much product as you desire – this face shape can handle a
significant amount of hair. A quiff works well, whether done more
classically or with a modern edge. You can also try out deeper side
parts which will enhance your features.
Diamond
The diamond face shape is characterized by a narrow chin and forehead with wide cheekbones. Hair
styles that work best with this face shape have narrower sides and fullness at the chin. A bob is a
great haircut for this face shape. This face shape can also add straight bangs to shorten the face. Also
try tucking your hair behind your ears to accentuate your prominent cheekbones.
For women:
For a soft look, consider a medium or long layered cut worn
with tousled waves and a deep side part. If you wish to
widen the appearance of your jaw, on the other hand, a chin-
length bob will work best. Also, don’t forget to try a pulled
back ponytail for a look that will show off your cheekbones
while also widening the appearance of your forehead.
For men:
Side parts work very well for gentlemen with diamond face shapes so ensure
that your hair is textured and a little messy, which will complement your
facial features better. A textured or angular fringe will also balance out the
wider proportions of your cheekbones with your forehead, lending a more
balanced aesthetic.
Heart
This face shape is characterized by a wider forehead and narrower chin. Adding side swept bangs to
this style helps disguise the width of the forehead. Keeping the style fuller around the jaw helps to
add weight to the narrower chin.
For women:
For example, a long side-swept cut will disguise part of
your forehead while drawing eyes down to the bottom of
your face. You can also pair this cut with waves or curls
starting below the ear to even out your angled jaw.
Alternatively, a side-parted pixie cut with textured ends
can also appear gorgeous on a heart face shape, as can
a bob or lob, which will ensure fullness around your jaw.
For men:
A textured fringe or dimensional quiff will do the job- just remember that
you should use a lightweight product to ensure that you are not creating
disproportionate angles.
