Chapter I

Impact of Broken Family in the Socialization of Senior High School Students in Marian
College of Baliuag, Inc.

Introduction

In the last decades, the one who is working for the family is the father but as time goes

by, as the world is gradually becoming an industrialized one, both of the parents are working

for the family to survive. Because of the increasing population the cost of living is getting

higher and higher resulting to the insufficient budget, the parents had no choice but to go to

work to earn more money to support their children’s needs. The time for their children is

limited only little do they know that their children lacks of support, guide, and even love,

sometimes causes them to lose attention. According to Amato (2007), a broken family can be

the cause of a child mislead in life. A child’s mislead life is blame to parent’s inability to

maintain a stable home. Nowadays, the way we live makes it difficult to accomplish life

without meeting problems and aggravation in all kinds, financial, educational, occupational and

marital problems. Most of the time people cannot surpass these challenges leading to the

discontentment in the society, affects his/her behavior and the incapability to make appropriate

judgment to conflicts change his/her personality that cause broken homes. As stated by

Conkline (2006), a family maybe intact or broken. It may be defined with various reasons such

as death of parents, divorce, separation, desertion or illegitimacy. In the Philippines society,

family is the basic social unit where we first learned how to socialized. There is a saying “No

man is an island” we people cannot live without interacting with each other. We shape

ourselves through socializing, starting when we first breath until we die. A process which

people can learn to become members of the society, it started from birth and continues

throughout life (Tepperman and Curtis, 2011). It may be hard for the child who came from a

broken family to interact to other people especially to a stranger, they have higher risk to

develop low self-esteem, and emotional problem compared to those children with complete

family. The researcher’s purpose is to determine the impacts of broken family when it comes in

socialization of Senior High School Students of Marian College of Baliuag, Inc. This study

would benefit not only those people who are now struggling from broken family, but it also

gives awareness to everyone, for them to know how difficult to have a broken family is.

Children from divorced family have more emotional problem than those children with

complete family (Schultz, 2006). Therefore, the researcher’s wants to find out if a broken

family is a big factor why a Senior High Student having a hard time communicating with other.

The burden that the student is handedly carrying is not a joke. A student belong in a broken

family sometimes as broken as a student can be war freak, seeking for much attention, trouble

maker, and loud.

Statement of the Problem

Generally, this study aims to know what is the Impact of Broken family to the

Socialization of Senior High School Students in Marian College of Baliuag Inc. Specifically,

this study aims to answer the following questions: 1. What are the indicators that the impact of

broken family to the socialization is already manifested? 2. How do growing up with a broken

family affects the perception when it comes to socialization of a person who grew up in that

situation?

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This section of the study presents the review of related literature and studies on local

and foreign sources which will add more relevance and depth of the research study.

Foreign Literature

According to Afshan Qureshi in his study entitled “Socio-Psychological Effects of

Broken Families on Socialization and Academic Performance among the Children of Multan

Division” findings shows that the cause of broken family is not only divorce, here death is also

the reason of it. All the children girls and boys are all affected by broken families. After family

break-up children have to face many problems due to lack of attention of parent. Children

adopt many wrong ways to get attention of parents mother/father who lives with them but

parent cannot understand that what they want and they snub or beat them; here there

socialization is affected very harshly and children understand that their parent don’t love us

which make them stubborn. They adopt many different habits for getting the attention of

parents if mother/father cannot understand the rationale behind the action of their children and

punish them then those habits become strong which make them deviant or create many

psychological problems for these children and their academic performance is affected very

badly. For this, the future of these children is badly ruined. The instrument used to gather data

was participants observation.

According to TriaWidyastuti in his study entitled “Resilience of a Child from Broken-

Home Family: a Phenomenological Study” findings shows that The finding in this research is

consistent with Resilience Framework from Kumpfer (2002) that resilience of a child from

broken-home family can be explained by six major predictors of resilience process: (1) stressor

or challenge, (2) environmental context, (3) person-environment interactional process, (4)

internal self- characteristics, (5) resilience processes, and (6) positive outcomes. In addition,

there is a new finding that maturity in age and internal characteristics of subject are served as

important factors in this case. Maturity in age played a role in processing and understanding the

problems better. Therefore, the parental divorce and family conflict as the stressor which

experienced by subject since childhood are solved when the subject has already been young

adult. The internal characteristics of subject is more dominant in achieving the resilience. The

resilience process is triggered by subject’s internal characteristics including religiosity,

cognitive, and social competencies. These factors appeared and developed as the subject grown

up. The process of resilience began with the subject’s acceptance and active coping in facing

the problems. The openness in communication which get reciprocity from the significant other

around the subject by giving social support to subject has a role in achieving resilience.

Therefore, the lesson learned from this case are resilience can be achieved if the individual who

exposured the stressors coped the problem actively. It is supported by both of internal and

external resilience factors which include of: (1) acceptance, (2) religiosity, (3) cognitive ability,

(4) social competencies, and (5) social support. Mature age seemed to be an important factor in

achieving resilience since it reflect maturity in those factors cited previously. The instrument

used to gather data was depth interview, audio recordings, and direct observation and was

interpreted using triangulation, triangulation was employed to ensure that the phenomenon was

explored from multiple perspectives. Triangulation of data sources was done by doing an

interview with the significant people. The significant people is a friend of subject since in

Junior High School who knows the dynamics of the subject’s' live. Triangulation also was done

by rechecking the subject responses during the interview.

According to Ibrahim Umar in his study entitled “Effects of Broken Home on Student

Academic Performance in Esan West Local Government Area, Edo State” As a result of the

conclusion from the findings from the `study, the researchers are disposed to say that there is

no useful recommendation for the practical implementation of this study. This is because the

conclusion from the finding of this study is that students would perform essentially the same

way in test of academics achievements no matter the status of their homes. This is a mis-

normal as numerous literatures abounds that support the fact that students from different homes

background perform differently in test of academic achievements suggestion for further study.

It is the candid opinion of the researchers that this researcher study be replaced by any other

this researcher to test the validity of the researchers believed is spurious. This spurious finding,

there researcher have attributed in part sampling error and socialization effects among

adolescent group, also affecting the educational level of the society. The instrument used to

gather data was survey, the instrument will be administered directly by the researchers, the

researcher who will personally distribute the checklist and collects them will then go into

records to examine the result of the students under consideration. The researcher will be able to

cover the seventeen public schools in three weeks, at the need of which data collected will be

carefully analyzed and was interpreted by having used last promotion examination result of the

students in relevant schools, the researcher will go ahead to use t-test independence two tailed

test to analyzed scores of the students from both home. The same t-test will equally be used to

test the null hypothesis of two randomly drawn independent sample of grades of students in

urban and rural schools made up students from broken.

According to Akinleke Wasiu in his study entitled “Impact of Family Structure on the

Academic Performance of Secondary School Students in Yewa Local Government Area of

Ogun State Nigeria” Findings shows that, The implications of the findings were that

parental separation should be avoided and religious leaders, counselors as well as government

must engage in enlightening parents about the importance of family structure on the life of

children and in ensuring a well-ordered society. The use to gather data was both qualitative and

quantitative data were collected for this study. To collect the qualitative information, in-depth

interviews were conducted with the ten (10) teachers that were in classrooms at the time that

the study was being conducted. Teachers were included in the population because they are also

parents and are involved in the daily upbringing of children. International Journal of Sociology

and Anthropology Research Vol.3, No.1, pp.1-10, February 2017 ___Published by European

Centre for Research Training and Development UK (www.eajournals.org) 5 To collect the

quantitative data, the Multidimensional Life Satisfaction Scale (MSLSS) that was designed by

Suldo and Huebner (2006) was used. It is a 40-item scale, which was designed in Likert-type of

six responses that range from 1 = completely disagree to 6 = completely agree. The scale was

designed to measure five dimensions of life satisfaction, which include family, friends, living

environment, school and self satisfaction. Scores of each dimension is obtained through adding

up scores and dividing it by the total

number of items of that dimension. The scale had earlier been used by Mozhgan and

Mohammadreza (2011) in a study titled “Family Structure and Multidimensional Adolescent’s

Life Satisfaction”. They claimed that the scale’s reliability is satisfying.

To gather data on students’ academic performance, their scores in Mathematics and English

Language (which are compulsory subjects in all secondary schools) of the second term of

2014/2015 academic session were obtained from their class teachers with the permission of the

principals of the schools. The scores were then converted to Z-scores in order to ensure their

reliability and validity since they were collected from different schools. Also known as a

standard score, Z-score is a measure of how many standard deviations below or above the

population means a raw score is. It is a way of comparing results from a test to a normal

population and the scores range from -3 std devs to +3 std devs. For the current study, -2 std

devs to +2 std devs were obtained. -2 represented a very poor performance; -1 represented a

poor performance; 0 signifies an average performance; 1 represented good performance; and 2

represented brilliant of performance, and was interpreted using Several statistical methods

were employed in the course of analyzing the data obtained for this study. Such methods

include tables, simple percentages, cross-tabulations, charts and t-test.

Acoording to Igbinosa Omoruyi in his study entitled “Influence of Broken Homes on

Academic Performance and Personality Development of the Adoloscent in Lagos State

Metropolis”. Findings shows that 1. There is significant difference between single- parenting

and academic performance of the adolescents. 2. There is significant difference between Socio-

economic status of the adolescents and academic performance. And 3. There is positive

relationship between adolescents from broken homes and academic performance. The

instruments use to gather data was, A self- designed instrument was used for the study. The

instrument is made up of three sections. Section A, B and section C. The section A contained

item eliciting the bio- data of the participants. Section B contained statements on the five Likert

Scale requiring the respondents to indicate their level of agreement and disagreement to the

items. The responses ranged from strongly Agree (SA), Agree (A), Undecided (UND),

Disagree (D) and Strongly Disagree (SD). The section contained 30 items. Items 1-8 dealt with

the effects of adolescents whose parents are separated on academic performance, items 9-12

gathered information on adolescents gender difference on academic achievement, items 13-18

were concerned on the influence of parental socio- economic status of the adolescents on

academic performance and items 19-30 measured the effects of broken homes on academic

performance of the adolescents. And section C contained 20 items multiple choice questions

extracted from 2013 Unified Examination conducted for all Senior Secondary Schools 11.

Items set were used to assess students’ academic performance in English language and Biology

as they were compulsory subjects offered in secondary schools . Each subject contained 10

items, and was interpreted using he null hypotheses formulated for this study were subjected to

statistical testing for the purpose of either accepting or rejecting them. Hypothesis one and two

were tested with t-test statistics and three was tested using Pearson Product Moment

Correlation Statistical method. The three hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance.

According to Coronel Bubelwa his entitled “EFFECTS OF BROKEN MARRIAGE

ON PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN ILALA

MUNICIPALITY” . Findings shows that, There are two opposing sides on the negative effect

of broken marriage on children’s academic performance. These opposing sides could be

explained as an influence of the media, the church and the school, which see marriage as a

norm, where two parents are supposed to live together and rear their children and broken one

are going against the norm. Literature consistently shows that broken marriage has negative

effects on children’s growth physically and psychologically but it is silent on positive effects of

broken marriage on children’s development. Although there are those who believe a broken

marriage is better than exposing children to adult violence, they also believe that marriage is a

good thing for nurturing the family, regardless of other gender-based exploitation. Children

who have experienced violence feel better when the marriage eventually is broken, but they

suffer negative identification as developing bad manners due to lack of one figure, father or

mother. The instrument use to gather data was the study used triangulation data gathering

technique. These techniques were questionnaires, interviews and documentary reviews.

Questionnaires were distributed to respondents (teachers and community members) and was

interpreted using , Since this study involves both quantitative and qualitative data analysis

needed separation of these data. Quantitative data especially those concerning the behavior and

the opinion of the people was recorded in interview and focus group discussion guides.

Quantitative data was categorized and be presented in a tabular form and graphs.

According to Adetayo Olokuntoye to his study entitled “HE EFFECT OF BROKEN

HOME ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS” . Findings shows that,

The study conclude that, most of the respondents are not staying with their parents. They

perform below expectation due to the, lack of security care and discipline in school are not

been paid. The study further conclude that some of the factors which causes psychological

effects on student’s academic achievement as a result of broken home are lack of care security

and discipline. The instruments use gather data was the major instrument used for collecting

data was a questionnaire and was interpreted using the data collected were organized and

According to Shirina Aktar in his study entitled “Effects of Family Breakup on

Children: A Study in Khulna City - Bangladesh Sociological Society”. Findings shows that,

Family breakup is a common feature in contemporary society. In our country, after their

parents’ separation, children face various problems due to economic insolvency. Because of

severe poverty, most of them do not get educational facilities, health facilities and so on. They

also go through an identity crisis. Besides, they cannot interact with their neighbors, peers,

relative, and classmates. Most of them are always in frustration that leads to various deviant

behaviors. They commit various crimes. Most of them are involved in drug addiction and

smoking. Therefore, it is very essential to minimize family breakup rate. If family breakup

occurs after child birth, then both father and mother should be more conscious about their

children’s overall development. The instruments use to gather data was data were collected

through survey method, and was interpreted using data were computerized, analyzed and

interpreted by using frequency distribution, percentage, etc.

According to Kyla Mae Fontanila in her study entitled “SHATTERD AND TORN:

LIVED EXPEIRENCE OF BROKEN FAMILIES”. Findings shows that the researcher will

interview the participants of the study who all conformed to share their lived experiences

regarding their problems facing in a broken family. The interviews will be covered through

voice record by the use of mobile devices and then transcribe in a verbatim manner. The

instruments use was gather data was they will collect qualitative data through interviews and

According to Gülsüm 'úHNa * Aynur Bütün Ayhanb and his study entitled “A study

on problem solving skills of the children from broken family and full parents family attending

regional primary boarding school”. Findings shows that, this study was conducted with the

purpose of analyzing the problem solving skills of children from broken and full parents

families, who attend regional primary boarding school and to determine whether attending

boarding schools, the number of siblings, and educational level of the mother and the father

have an effect on the children’s problem solving skills. The study determined that there is no

significant difference in the problem solving skills of children from broken and full parents

families and attending boarding schools creates a negative significant difference in both

groups. In addition, while it was determined that the educational level of the mother and the

father and the number of siblings creates a significant difference in the problem solving skills

of children from full parents families, these factors do not create a significant difference in

children from broken families. This difference could have been a result of children forming

fewer relationships with their siblings, not being able to adapt to new parents and siblings who

join the family or inadequacies in mother-father interactions. Therefore, children from broken

families may be allowed to spend more quality time with their families. Children from broken

families may be given homework, which can be done with their families and siblings, and are

at a point to increase their problem solving skills. According to the results of the study, living

far away from family, attending boarding schools or having broken families are conditions that

negatively affect children’s development. In order to be able to minimize this negativity, it is

important to have healthy communication at home, the appropriate people who can be good

models for children, and spending quality time with family and siblings. Therefore, it is

considered that elementary school children living with their families will positively affect the

children’s psycho-social and emotional development. Activities may be carried out to increase

the problem solving skills of children who attend regional primary boarding schools. As these

may be used more frequently in class activities, they may also be administered during

children’s study times. Along with the education administered to increase children’s problem

solving skills, children’s problem solving skills may be monitored. The ionstruments used to

gather data was 2.1 Participants The study group of the study consisted of a total of 100

children, four of whom came from broken families and 51 of whom cane from full parents

families, and who receive education in the three regional primary boarding schools in the city

of Giresun. % 57 of the children were female and 43% were male; 39% were in eighth grade,

36% were in seventh grade, and 25% were in sixth grade. Forty-five percent of the children

continued their education in boarding school, while 55% continued their education in day

schools and was interpreted using The study data were compiled by the researcher. Each child

was asked to complete the General Information Form and the Problem Solving Skills Scale. In

the study, in order to determine which statistical analysis was to be used, it was first determined

whether the compiled data displayed normal distribution, identified through the kurtosis

skewness coefficient, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, and graphic analysis. As a result of the

normality analysis, it was determined that the distribution related to the problem solving skill

scale was normal and thus, the decision was made use the t-test and one-way analysis of

variance, which are parametric analysis methods, in the analysis of the data.

are as follows: reaction, circumspection, self-recognition, stagnation, and overturn. This study

aimed to know the impact of parental infidelity to late adolescents in establishing romantic

relationships. To be able to come up with the impact/s of parental infidelity, questions

pertaining to their experiences were asked. The participants provided answers which included

his/her feelings and thoughts regarding parental infidelity, the actions performed and emotions

expressed after discovering his/her parent’s infidel behavior, and plans in the future regarding

his/her own relationships. All of the participants experienced parental infidelity and admitted

that at one point in their life, they felt angry and blamed the parent(s) for the conflict. The

instrumenst use to gather data was an aide memoir was the main instrument used to gather the

data for this study. According to Zhang & Wildemuth [11], an aide memoir contains questions

which served as a comprehensive guide about the topic, issues or areas that were covered

during the interview. It consisted of questions concerned about the experiences of individuals

regarding parental infidelity, its impact to their family relations and in the establishment of

According to JUDITH LARTELEY BOYE-LARYEA and her study entitled “THE

EFFECTS OF BROKEN HOMES ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF PUPILS OF

LOWER MANYA KROBO DISTRICT”. Findings shows that it is evident from the studies

that there were more males in schools than females in the Junior High Schools. This is contrary

to the fact that there are more females than males in the country and in any gathering of people.

The situation may be attributed to the fact that trading is the main source of income for the

people and mostly women are engaged in businesses that use the girl child instead of going to

school. The instruments use to gather data was the questionnaire and interview methods were

used for data collection and was interpreted using for statistical analysis of results, data
