Anna was the new girl at my school. I did not like her. I did not like her even one little bit. I tried to be friendly to her. I really did.
I walked up to her and said, "Hi, I'm Stacy. Welcome to our school. I can show you around." She just looked at me and did not say a word.
Then she walked away. She thought she was too good to talk to me.
She did the same thing to Billy. During recess, Billy wanted to know what time it was. He asked Anna, since she was wearing a watch. But
Anna didn’t tell him the time. She just walked away without saying anything again.
At lunch, she sat at a table all by herself. Yesterday, Eric invited Anna to join us at our table, but she ignored him.
So you can imagine how unhappy I was when I got paired up with Anna for my science project. "Listen Anna, I don't like you, and you don’t
like me," I told her, "but we have to build a model solar system together. So I will go home and build the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.”
"You can go home and build the other planets. Then we will put the model together at school tomorrow." Anna gave me a blank look. She still
said nothing.
"What don't you understand? We're partners. We have to build a model solar system. And we have to build it together!"
"No understand English," said Anna. Anna had just moved here from Russia. She didn't respond to what we said because she didn't
understand us.
She was also a great science project partner. She painted the planets beautifully. Our solar system got an A+. I still didn't know much about
Anna. We couldn't talk about much. I knew she painted well. I knew she liked kittens. And she taught me a few Russian words.

Today is an exciting day. A dangerous animal is coming to the ranch. Maggie Moonpie is afraid. I promise to protect her.

new animal. In the corner there is a closed crate. I can see the shape of an animal through the crate’s small holes. Maggie and I crawl closer to
it.
Maggie presses her face against the crate. “It is a monster!” she exclaims.
I open the latch on the crate and poke my head inside for a better look. Something hisses. It scampers past me and heads right towards
Maggie!
It is a monster! It has a rubber beak with a beaver tail and webbed feet like a duck. I jump in front of Maggie to protect her. Rangers do not let
others get hurt.
The monster is about to jump on me. I open my arms to catch it. Rangers are not afraid. Luckily, a net scoops it up before it can reach me.
My dad holds the swaying net in his hands. He tells us to follow him. We walk out to the pond.
“This is a platypus. There is venom in its foot that could really hurt you.” He releases the platypus into the pond. It swims away, slapping the

So Long Solo

Have you heard about the secret lives of shadows? It is all true. Shadows look a little bit like people. They move when we move. But shadows all
have their own lives.
Shadows are nocturnal. When we see our shadows, they are sleeping. When we jump up, we startle them.
When we are sleeping, they come out to play. When we are resting under trees, shadows are climbing them.
In the morning and the evening, our shadows look very long. That is because they are stretching.
In the morning, they are getting ready to go to sleep. As the sun sets, our shadows are waking up and preparing for the night.
Shadows use us as their beds. They are attached to our feet like sleeping bats hanging upside down from a cave. As long as we stay connected
to the ground, our shadows sleep peacefully.
If we step into other shadows while our shadows sleep, they get to float around like astronauts in space. We may think this would be really fun,
but shadows are used to it.
One time, the shadow of a famous musician got tired of being on stage all of the time. Every night, the shadow had to be on stage. It was like a
prison.
All of the shadows slept during the day and played at night. This shadow did not get to do either. All day the musician would practice. The
shadow could not sleep with the same music playing over and over again.
At night when the other shadows played, this shadow was stuck on-stage. The worst part was that no one even noticed the shadow. The shadow
felt lonely.
Finally, the shadow decided that things had to change. When the musician headed into the practice room, the shadow refused to go with him to
the piano. The musician was pulled backward when the shadow stopped.
The musician scratched his head. He did not know that the shadow had stopped him. Confused, the musician walked around to the other side of
the piano.
The shadow could no longer stop the musician because the musician walked in the shadows of the room. The shadow was upset at how unfair
this was. Sadly the shadow sat at a second piano behind the musician.
The shadow had heard the music many times before and had watched the musician. As the musician got the music out to practice, the shadow
decided to play.
At first, the shadow played very gently. It was almost too low for the musician to hear. But the musician had a very good ear. Looking around, he
noticed the shadow quietly pressing on the keys. The shadow played perfectly.
Instead of practicing, the musician listened. The shadow did not even notice. For five minutes the shadow played. For five minutes the musician

listened.
The musician clapped and clapped when the shadow finished. That was the most interesting and unexpected practice the musician or shadow
had ever had. They practiced duets and solos. They had such a good time. They practiced so long that they even forgot to eat.
Months later, the musician and the shadow began to play together on stage. A small spot light would light up the musician. A black light would
light up a second piano. Although they only saw the musician, the audience loved and applauded for the musician and his invisible duet partner.

Moving to a new school was already tough enough. It was even more difficult for Aaron because he had to learn a whole new language.

Aaron's mom asked the taxi driver to take them to a hotel. She had been practicing Spanish more than Aaron. She seemed to already know a lot
of Spanish. "Ugh, I need to practice!" Aaron said. Aaron's mom smiled at him.
The first week in Costa Rica was exciting but hard. It was frustrating for Aaron because he couldn't speak the language. Aaron tried to order a
fresh coconut drink from a street cart, but he couldn't understand how much it cost.
He tried to play soccer with some kids in the park, but he didn't know what they were saying to him. Soccer was called football in Costa Rica.
Aaron couldn't figure out why they were calling a soccer ball a football.
"Not until you learn more Spanish," his mom smiled. "The teacher won't be able to help you learn. It would not be safe."
He only had two months until school started. The new school year began in January in Costa Rica. It was winter in America, but the weather was
beautiful in Costa Rica.

Slowly, he began understanding what people were saying. Aaron started asking for items at the store. He talked to local kids. It was hard
sometimes. He messed up a lot.
Sometimes people laughed, but they weren't making fun of him. When he said a word incorrectly, they helped him. If he didn't know a word, he
guessed. He began practicing with his mom when she got home from work.
Some Spanish words were easier to say and spell than in English. "Tu" was faster to write than "you." Aaron really liked the words that were
easy and short.
Aaron only had one more week before school started. Even though he'd been practicing every day, Aaron was nervous about his first day.
"Don't worry," his mom said. "There are a lot of kids who will help you. Some kids will want to practice English with you."
Aaron was still very worried. What if he didn't make any friends? What if he couldn't talk with his new friends like he could back home?
When the first day of school came, he put on his new uniform. He wore tan shorts with a blue, button-up shirt. All children in Costa Rica wore
uniforms to school. Every school had a different colored uniform.
"You look great!" his mom said. Aaron wasn't so sure. When he got to school, there was a big surprise. There was a welcome sign in both
Spanish and English.
"Hey!" a boy said to him. "Do you speak English?" Aaron smiled. "Si," he said, which is Spanish for "yes." Maybe this wouldn't be such a bad
school year after all.
