Context Clues

Its beyond test-taking skills… Test taking skills are likewise needed but
they will not sustain you to get high scores.
What are context clues?

• They are hints that an author gives to help define a
difficult or unusual word.
• The clue may appear within the same sentence as
the word to which it refers, or it may follow in a
preceding sentence.
• Because most of one’s vocabulary is gained through
reading, it is important that you be able to recognize
and take advantage of context clues.

Repeat context clue which appears on the same sentence or close to it.

Examples:

1.  It was an idyllic day; sunny, warm and perfect for a walk in the park.
2.  Her animosity or hated of her sister had divided the family.

Antonym

Another term for contrast context clue that has the opposite meaning, which
can reveal the meaning of an unknown term;

Examples:

1.  Marty is gregarious, not like his brother who is quiet and shy.
2.  I am willing to climb the mountains but he is reluctant because it gets so cold
walking up and down the trails.

An explanation for an unknown word is given (a definition context clue) within
the sentence or in the sentence immediately preceding.

Examples:

1.  During the demonstration, a squirmish broke out and the police were called
to order.
2.  Something in the refrigerator has a putrid odor; the smell was rotten when
we opened the door.

An explanation for an unknown word is given (a definition context clue) within
the sentence or in the sentence immediately preceding.

Examples:

1.  Some celestial bodies, such as the planets and stars can be seen with the
naked eye.
2.  There was a lot of tangible evidence, including fingerprints and DNA, to
prove them guilty.

General Strategies for Word Parts

1.  Look for CONTEXT CLUES. Reread the sentence and
the surrounding sentences.

2. Can you break the WORD into PARTS? (If not, go to


Step 3).

•  Is there a PREFIX? What does it mean?


•  Is there a SUFFIX? What does it mean?
•  Is there a ROOT WORD? What does it mean?
•  Put the meaning of the word parts together. What is the
meaning of the whole word?

3. GUESS what the word means.
