    The election of Cyril Ramaphosa as president of the ANC was a disastrous tenure for the fourth estate, for
    Independent Media it was a season of its weakening.

    In the past five years Ramaphosa and his cabal have attempted every trick in the book to shut down
    Sekunjalo Holdings, the target was and remains Independent Media.

    Independent Media’s transformative stance and brand of news has irked the country’s number one. After
    heavy attempts to co-opt, persuade and silence our newsrooms, his final hand will be to permanently shut
    down Independent Media, using the banks, the judiciary, organs of state and wherever his reach extends to.
    This election is critical for the Republic as it is for Independent Media.

    behind the story and cast it forward rather than merely providing reportage on what has
    gone before.
    There are critical issues that need to be explored; who the main players on the ground
    are; the different camps (eg, RET) and the identification of who the main players are and
    their backgrounds/ histories.
    The role of the stream coordinators (AMs, PMs, Weekends and IOL), over and above
    the responsibilities above, can be to look at story angles that can be fleshed out by
    assigning the political hub and/ or the various regional reporting teams to explore and
    cover, to ensure that we have all round coverage not just of the conference.
