1. Cultural Relativism
Cultures differ, so that a cultural trait, act, or idea has no meaning or function by
itself but has a meaning only within its cultural setting.
Example: Marriage is monogamy among Christians but polygamy among Muslims.
Polygamy is immoral and sinful among the Christians but moral and appropriate
among Muslims.
2. Culture Shock
Feeling of disbelief, disorganization, and frustration one experiences when he
encounter cultural patterns or practice s which are different from his.
When one becomes so accustomed to his cultural milieu that he finds himself
disguised, unsettled, troubled, and disoriented when he enters another society with
a different culture.
Example; When a typical religious person enters a nudist camp, he may experience
shock and showed disbelief.
3. Noble Savage Mentality
The evaluation of one’s culture and that of other based on a romantic notion that
the culture and the way of life of the primitives or other simple culture is better,
more acceptable, and more orderly.
Example: Some urbanites say that rural lifestyle is better because they have simple
needs, fresher air, food, and sunshine.
4. Sub culture
Smaller groups which develop norms ,values, beliefs and special languages which
make them distinct from the broader society
Example: Tagalogs, Ilokanos, Catholics, Protestants, Teenagers, Senior Citizen,
Urban Dwellers, Squatters
5. Counterculture/Contra culture
Subgroups whose standards come in conflict with and oppose the conventional
standards of the dominant society, and are the considered social problems
Example: Deviance such as criminal, Juvenile delinquents, racketeers, drug
addicts. Prostitutes, gun runner.
6. Culture Lag
Gap between the material and the non-material culture
Material advances more rapidly and is more readily accepted by people such the non-
material culture lags behind.
Example: Muslims readily accept modern means of transportation but remain steadfast in
the religious faith, a new invention is introduced before the skills to utilize it are developed.
