Perspectives on Culture

1. Cultural Relativism
 Cultures differ, so that a cultural trait, act, or idea has no meaning or function by
itself but has a meaning only within its cultural setting.
Example: Marriage is monogamy among Christians but polygamy among Muslims.
Polygamy is immoral and sinful among the Christians but moral and appropriate
among Muslims.
2. Culture Shock
 Feeling of disbelief, disorganization, and frustration one experiences when he
encounter cultural patterns or practice s which are different from his.
 When one becomes so accustomed to his cultural milieu that he finds himself
disguised, unsettled, troubled, and disoriented when he enters another society with
a different culture.
Example; When a typical religious person enters a nudist camp, he may experience
shock and showed disbelief.
3. Noble Savage Mentality
 The evaluation of one’s culture and that of other based on a romantic notion that
the culture and the way of life of the primitives or other simple culture is better,
more acceptable, and more orderly.
Example: Some urbanites say that rural lifestyle is better because they have simple
needs, fresher air, food, and sunshine.
4. Sub culture
 Smaller groups which develop norms ,values, beliefs and special languages which
make them distinct from the broader society
Example: Tagalogs, Ilokanos, Catholics, Protestants, Teenagers, Senior Citizen,
Urban Dwellers, Squatters
5. Counterculture/Contra culture
 Subgroups whose standards come in conflict with and oppose the conventional
standards of the dominant society, and are the considered social problems
 Example: Deviance such as criminal, Juvenile delinquents, racketeers, drug
addicts. Prostitutes, gun runner.
6. Culture Lag
 Gap between the material and the non-material culture
 Material advances more rapidly and is more readily accepted by people such the non-
material culture lags behind.
 Example: Muslims readily accept modern means of transportation but remain steadfast in
the religious faith, a new invention is introduced before the skills to utilize it are developed.

Write five similarities, and also five differences.

CONCEPT NOTES
Ethnocentrism
 Tendency to see the behaviours, beliefs, values and norms of one’s own group as the only
right way of living and to judge others bu those standards.
 It is the term anthropologists use to describe the opinion that one’s own way of life is
natural or correct.
 Feeling of superiority of one’s own culture
Consequences of Ethnocentrism
1. Ethnocentrism encourages false conclusions.
2. It creates rifts within societies.
3. Ethnocentrism can even divide families.
4. It drives people away from a culture.
5. Ethnocentrism limits perspectives..
Example: Extreme Japanese Nationalism
Philippines as Pearl of the Orient Sea
Xenocentrism
 The idea that what is foreign is best and that one’s lifestyle, product or ideas are inferior
to those of others
 Reverse Ethnocentrism
 Example : Mania for Imported Goods and Foreign Lifestyle
Colonial Mentality
Consequences of Xenocentrism includes:
1. Loss of businesses in the home country 3. Overall reduction of morale within the nation
2. Degraded economical situation 4. A loss of population to emigration
5. Negative impact on the identity of others in relation to culture

Answer the following questions:
1. Using a Venn Diagram compare and contrast Ethnocentrism and Xenocentrism?
Cite five similarities and five differences.

CONCEPT NOTES
Cultural Forms
 Provides link from mankind’s past through present into future
 Becomes a cultural heritage only when it is recognized as such by he community, group
or individual that create, maintain, and transmit it.
Kinds of Cultural Forms:
1. Tangible Cultural Heritage
 A form of culture that includes All material objects and physical substance which has
been changed and used by people
 Provide the physical space for the non-physical expressions of culture
Example:
 Artifacts
 Buildings or landscapes
 Tools
 Furniture
 Bridges
2. Intangible Cultural Heritage
 A form of culture that consists of abstraction.
 It includes traditions or living expressions inherited from our ancestors and passed on to
the next generations.
 Has evolved in response in the changes in the community it belongs
 Has sense of identity and continuity
 Is not merely valued as a cultural good, on a comparative basis, for its exclusivity or its
exceptional value, which qualifies as representative heritage.

 Social practices
 Festive events
 Knowledge pertaining to a skill

Major Cultural Threat

1. Globalization- is the spread of products, technology, information, and jobs across


national borders and cultures. In economic terms, it describes an interdependence of
nations around the globe fostered through free trade.
2. Technological Revolution- is a period in which one or more technologies are replaced
by another, novel technology in a short amount of time.
3. Cultural Homogenization- is an aspect of cultural globalization, listed as one of its main
characteristics, and refers to the reduction in cultural diversity through the popularization
and diffusion of a wide array of cultural symbols—not only physical objects but customs,
ideas and values.
Other Danger and Threats of Cultural Heritage:
 war and political affair
 ethnic and religious conflict
 looting, theft
 illegal export and import
 illicit trafficking of cultural property
 deterioration
 neglect
 destruction of or alteration to heritage
 pollution
 disappearance

2. To ensure the continuity of Philippine culture, how can you contribute in the preservation
