I. Addition and Subtraction
A. Addition is the process of adding two or more
numbers together to get their sum. Addition in math is
a primary arithmetic operation, used for
calculating the total of two or more numbers.

Example 1: There are 7 apples in one basket and 4 apples

in the other. How many apples are there in all?

So, we add 7 and 4 to find the total number of apples.

To add 7 and 4, we can count forward 4 steps from 7
The symbol used to indicate Addition is + (plus symbol).
So, 7 and 4 can be written as 7 + 4

Example 2: Kate sliced 51 guavas in the morning. Then

later that evening, she sliced 20 guavas. What is the total
numbers of guavas did Kate sliced?

So, we add 51 and 20 to find the total numbers of guavas.

To add 51 and 20, we count forward 20 steps from 50
So, 51 and 20 can be written as 51  20
Activity

Find the sum of the following:

1. 3 + 2 =
2. 5 + 2 =
3. 13 + 14 =
4. 30 + 21 =
5. 315 + 153 =
6. 228 + 130 =
7. 8 + 2 =
8. 25 + 75 =
9. 325 + 52 =
10. 524 + 243 =
B. Subtraction in mathematics means you are taking
something away from a group or number of things.
When you subtract, what is left in the group becomes
less.

Example 1: Sebastian has 8 pencils. He gives away 5

pencils to his friends. How many pencils does he have
now?

So, we subtract 8 and 5 to find the total number of pencils.

To subtract 8 and 5, we can count backward 5 steps from
8
The symbol used to indicate Subtraction is - (minus
symbol).
So, 8 and 5 can be written as 8 – 5
Example 2: Kara has 87 marbles. She gave 18 to Sara.
How many marbles does she have left?

So, we subtract 87 and 18 to find the total number of

pencils.
To subtract 87 and 18, we can count backward 18 steps
from 87
87 and 18 can be written as 87 - 18
Activity

Find the difference.

1. 10 – 2 =
2. 5 – 3 =
3. 32 – 13 =
4. 16 – 9 =
5. 139 – 33 =3
6. 722 – 626 =
7. 1 989 – 145 =
8. 474 – 371 =
9. 211 – 32 =
10. 440 – 361 =
II. Multiplication and Division
A.Multiplication is the result of combining groups of
equal sizes. In other words, multiplication is repeated
addition.

Example 1: While on the plane Diego played 4 games

every hour. If the trip lasted 3 hours, how many games did
Diego play?
So, we multiply 4 and 3 to find the total amount of games
Diego played.
To multiply 4 and 3, we can use the repeated addition step
The symbol used to indicate Multiplication is x ( times
symbol)
4 x 3 = 4 + 4 + 4 = 12
4 and 3 can be written as 4 x 3
Example 2: There are 3 brunches of bananas. Each
brunch has 6 bananas. How many bananas are there in
all?
So, we multiply 4 and 3 to find the total amount of games
Diego played.
To multiply 4 and 3, we can use the repeated addition step
3 x 6 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 18

Activity

Determine the product of the following:

1. 7 x 10 =
2. 6 x 3 =
3. 32 x 13 =
4. 21 x 19 =
5. 618 x 55 =
6. 273 x 339 =
7. 10 x 95 =
8. 76 x 34 =
9. 186 x 232 =
10. 739 x 32 =
B. Division is one of the four basic operations of
arithmetic, the ways that numbers are combined to make
new numbers. In these enlarged number systems, division
is the inverse operation to multiplication

Example 1: 5 people want omelets for breakfast. If there

are 15 eggs, how many eggs are needed for each omelet?
To divide 15 and 5, we need how many fives are there in a
fifteen
The symbol used to indicate Division is ÷ (divide symbol)

15 and 5 can be written as 15 ÷ 5

Example 2: Sari baked a batch of 81 cookies. She wants

to split them up evenly among 8 friends and herself. How
many cookies will each person get?

To divide 81 and 8, we need how many eights are there in

eighty-one

81 and 8 can be written as 81 ÷ 8

Activity

Find the quotient:

1. 12 ÷ 2 =
2. 10 ÷ 5 =
3. 27 ÷ 3 =
4. 32 ÷ 13 =
5. 100 ÷ 10 =
6. 136 ÷ 78 =
7. 189 ÷ 5 =
8. 36 ÷ 12 =
9. 14 ÷ 2 =
10. 8 ÷ 2 =
III. Multiplication, Division, Addition,
Subtraction (MDAS)

A. In a series of operations involving multiplication,

division, addition, and subtraction, the operations
multiplication and division should be done first from left to
right. Subtraction and addition are carried out next.

Activity

Answer the following using the rule of MDAS:

1. 6 x 6 + 3 x 4 =
2. 56 ÷ 7 x 5 + 60 =
3. 24 ÷ 8 - 12 ÷ 6 =
4. 90 + 8 x 5 - 30 =
5. 96 ÷ 12 x 4 + 8 =
IV. Exponentiation, Multiplication,
Division, Addition, Subtraction (EMDAS)

A. The exponentiation (E) followed by the MDAS

operations is referred to as the EMDAS rule. If grouping
(G) symbols are also used with exponentiation, then, we
follow the rule called GEMDAS.

Activity

Find the answer to the following:

1. [(3² + 2³) + (8² – 4) x 2] x 3 =

2. [(9² ÷ 3⁴) x (5⁶ + 8⁴) – 6] =
3. [(6⁴ x 5⁵) – (4³ x 3³) ÷ 9] =
4. [(5² - 2²) x (3² + 4) + 5] =
5. [(3² x 6⁴) + (5³ ÷ 4²) – 10) =
V. Grouping, Exponent, Multiplication,
Division, Addition, Subtraction (GEMDAS)
GEMDAS is the rule that can be used to simplify or
evaluate complicated numerical expressions with more
than one binary operation.

Important Notes :

1. In a particular simplification, if you have both

multiplication and division, do the operations one by one in
the order from left to right.

2. Division does not always come before multiplication.

We have to do one by one in the order from left to right.

3. In a particular simplification, if you have both addition

and subtraction, do the operations one by one in the order
from left to right.

Activity

1. (36 ÷ 9 + 14) ÷ 9 + 12 – 10 =

2. 12 + 3 [18 – 5 (16 – 13)] =

3. [(40 – 30) + (4+2)] =

4. 580 ÷ 2² + 541 =
5. [4² + (35 ÷ 7) – 9] 2 =
