REVISION. A
PROCEDURE 1 of 9

1. Scope

This procedure describes the preparation and execution before, during and after
P.W.H.T. of the Pressure Vessels

2. Reference
2.1 ASME Sec VIII Div I 2021 Edition
2.2 ASME Sec V 2021 Edition.
2.3 Client Specification (If Applicable)

3. Methods of Post Weld Heat Treatment

The Post Weld Heat Treatment within velocity gas fired furnace of modular
construction furnace and the preferred fuel gas is LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas). The
Post Weld Heat Treatment Performed in one heating. The Post Weld Heat
Treatment by Furnace only for pressure vessels after completed fabrication at Shop
PT. Multi Fabrindo Gemilang.

4. Preparation
4.1 All welding (on the vessel shell) and expansion bellows should be completed
prior to P.W.H.T.
4.2 All of welding surface and shell material shall be free from scale, rust, oil,
grease, and deleterious foreign material before conducting PWHT.
4.3 All of Non Destructive Examination (NDE) required on shell and expansion
bellows shall be completed and accepted before conducting P.W.H.T.
4.4 No piping, stairways, platforms, wires or any other equipment to be attached
to the vessel which would restrain the vessel movement during the P.W.H.T.
cycle. Unless slotted, unrestrained attachments are employed in the mounting
mechanism to allow for unrestrained vessel expansion and contraction.
4.5 Prior to performing P.W.H.T, make sure that provisions have been made to
vent the pressure vessel. Remove plugs from all vent holes.

4.6 Deoxamluminite ( protective coating ) is to be applied to all machined flange

faces, coupling threads, nozzles, fitting, etc. immediately prior to installing
P.W.H.T. insulation.
4.7 Prior to performing P.W.H.T, all internal vessels should be removed except
part which attached to the vessel.
4.8 Temporary Support for Pressure Vessels shall be prepare and assure no
deformation during heating the pressure vessels

5. Procedure
5.1 The Temperature of furnace shall not exceed 800ºF (425ºC) at the time the
Pressure vessels is placed in it.
5.2 The heating shall be accomplished with a luminous flame burner. The
luminous flame will pass through the vessel so that there is no flame
impingement on the shell walls. The atmosphere of a luminous flame that fired
shell does not oxidize with the material being post weld heat treated.
5.3 Thermocouples (type K) shall be located as seen on the attached sketches. The
temperature of these locations shall be simultaneously recorded against time
on a strip chart using a multiple point potentiometer type instrument.
Recordings shall be taken continuously when the temperature is above 600 °F
(316 °C). Thermocouple shall be placed at each 4.5 meter (maximum) in axial
or tangential direction of shell. The temperature recorder have valid calibration
certificate.
5.4 Heating
a) Above 800ºF (425ºC) the rate of heating shall be not more than 400ºF
(222ºC) per hour divided by maximum metal thickness of heads in
inches, but in no case more than 400ºF (222ºC) per hour and in no case
need it be less than 100ºF (55ºC) per hour.
b) During the heating period there shall not be a greater variation in
temperature throughout the portion of the item being heated than 250ºF
(139ºC). Within 15 feet (4.6 m) interval of length.

5.5 Holding Temperature

a) The heating treated of heads shall be held at or above the temperature for
the period of the time specified below table.
b) During the hold period, there shall no be a greater difference than
150ºF(83ºC) between the highest and lowest temperature throughout the
portion of the item being heated, except where the range is further
limited in table UCS-56
c) During the heating and holding periods, the furnace atmosphere shall be
controlled as to avoid excessive oxidation of the surface of the item, the
furnace shall be prevent direct flame impingement the flame on the item.
5.6 Holding Time
The heat treated shall be held at or above the temperature specified in table as
follow:
P No Temperature Range Min. Holding time at
normal temperature
ºF ºC Up to 2 In
1 1100 ~ 1148 595 ~ 620 1 hr/In ; 15 Minutes Min.

5.7 Cooling
Above 800ºF(425ºC), cooling shall be under insulation at a rate not greater
than 500ºF(280ºC) per hour divided by maximum metal thickness of the item
in inches, but no case more than 500ºF (280ºC) per hour. From 800ºF (425ºC)
the vessel may be cooling in still air.

6. Inspection
6.1 Inspection work shall be carried out in accordance with this procedure and
instruction concerned. 100% RT on Welding Area on Pressure Parts Shall be
conducted after PWHT Completed.
6.2 QC Manager shall review the heat treatment chart record.

7. Site Instruction

7.1 Post weld heat treatment will be carried out by subcontractor at it’s shop
(furnace PWHT) or at PT. MULTIFAB premises or at site by means of
localized PWHT. Selected subcontractor with adequate facilities and
experience shall be used and with the concurrence and acceptance of the
Authorized Inspector.

7.2 The higher specified temperature shall be used to obtain the required
hardness for material with a higher Carbon content. For
quenched/normalized and temper steel, the PWHT temperature shall at least
10°C below the tempering temperature as to avoid unacceptable decrease of
mechanical properties. For vessel with thick wall, requiring prolonged
soaking time, where the PWHT temperature shall 20°C below the tempering

temperature. In the case of dissimilar metals the PWHT temperature for

these combination would be governed by the highest material PWHT
temperature in the combination.

7.3 PWHT could be carried out in the field by means of localized PWHT by
wrapping the work piece with electrical elements and insulated by insulation
materials with the following condition :

- The minimum heated band width shall be 5√(RT) and the minimum
insulation width shall be 10 √(RT).

A circular ring which is part of one of the following surfaces :

- A circular cylinder
- A circular Cone with semi-angle at the apex 30°C
- A segment of sphere with the central angle satisfying 120° ~ 240°C

Note : R = Inside Diameter (mm) ; T = Wall Thickness (mm)
