NAME: VAISHNAVI RAJESH

ROLL NO.: BCP/21/286

Ans-1 Traditional society characterized by an Orientation to the past, not the future with the
predominant for custom and habit. When a woman wants to live no one wants her to live the way she
wants. Traditions represent a critical piece of our culture. They help from the structure and foundation
of our families and our society and this critical thinking affects our options. In the paragraph when
several ministers attended the second day of the women's right convention and their opinion of man's
superiority over women. “One claimed superior intellect one spoke of the manhood of Christ and still
another referred to the sin of our first mother.”

The traditional society often associates the following characteristics with the word 'women' -

1. women need to be helped into carriages and lifted over ditches and to have the best place
everywhere.

2. women are weaker than men both mentally and physically

3. women can't have as much rights as men because Christ was not a woman.

4. The gender inequality was the biggest difference at that time

Ans- 2 Nonverbal language -

Human body plays a vital role in the process of communication. We use nonverbal language more
than verbal language includes -

• Body language

• Paralanguage

• Sign language

Body language

It includes all the body movements such as expressions, gestures, postures, etc .. All the body
movement act as a symbol and contribute to the meaning of the message.

Elements of body language -

1. Head

2. Eye

3. Face

4. Posture

5. Gesture

6. Personal appearance

The following gestures and non - verbal elements made the speech more effective -

1- Sojourner walked to the podium and slowly took off her sunbonnet - is an example of kinesics and
posture also as she walking to the podium.

2- “Sojourner pointed to one of the ministers” are examples of gestures, motion of hands to emphasize
a point.

3- 'Sojourner raised herself to her full height - is ab example of head which indicates that she was
standing with confidence.

PARALANGUAGE -

Paralanguage is a language but nonverbal. It focuses on how rather than what. Aims at the tone of voice
when something is said for example louder voice suggest anger or assertion while we'll whisper
indicates secrecy.

Its para linguistic property or speech play an important role in humans communication.

E.g. - voice quality, speaking style, speed, accent, volume, pitch, tone, rhythm, etc.

Factors of paralanguage-

1. Word stress

2. Intonation
By reading the above passage “ain't women” we can see the different examples of paralanguage and
those are-

“She begins to speak in her deep resonant voice” is an example of paralanguage as the deep resonant
voice indicates that she is trying to get attention of the audience in her speech.

“Look at me! Look at my arms” is an example of paralanguage as her loud voice suggests anger and
assertion in her speech.

“Where did you Christ come from? Where did you Chris come from?” is also an example of
paralanguage as the pitch and the tone of the voice and the words stress on where did the Christ come
from suggest speakers anger and exasperation.

“Half a dozen women whispered” is an example of paralanguage as it indicates whispering in fear

according to the passage.

Ans-3 We know truth's speech was successful from a statement “the entered church now roared with
defeating applause” This statement shows how impactful the speech was. Sojourner's way of addressing
the audience was different, her voice had anger, grace and confidence which were exerting influence on
the audience, especially females and the males who were in support, sojourner's speech was on the
dominant” ideology of patriarchy which changed the minds of women sitting in the audience.

Truth's speech conveys the black people rights. “Ain't I a women" made a great impact at the
convention and had since become a classic expression of women's rights.

LISTENING -

Listening to other is an elegant art it includes the absorption and understanding of spoken words,
sentences and information’s conveyed by the speaker.

Types of listening-

• Attentive listening

• Evaluating listening

We can see few examples from the article written above of attentive listening and evaluate listening are:
-
1 - “Intellect” whispered a woman nearby, is an example of evaluating listening. As the question there is
question asked by the speaker in the speech the female sitting the audience answers so this is an
immediate response.

2 - 'The women in the audience began to cheer wildly.'

3 - All the listeners were attentive while listening specifically the women in the audience and were also
cheering the speaker.
