    PAST SIMPLE – se foloseste:


    - pentru actiuni care au avut loc intr-un moment definit din trecut (for actions that happened in acertain past moment):
    Jane went to the supermarket last night. – Jane a mers la supermarket aseara.
    - pentru actiuni trecute scurte care au avut loc una dupa alta (for past short actions happening one after the other):
    She opened the door, turned on the light and looked after the cat. – Ea a deschis usa, a aprins lumina si a cautat pisica.
    - pentru obiceiuri din trecut care nu mai sunt valabile in prezent. In astfel de cazuri putem folosi si expresia used to (for
    past habits which are no longer. In these cases we can use the expression used to):
    When Ann was young, she rode/used to ride her bike to school. – Cand Ana era tanara, ea mergea/obisnuia sa mearga cu
    bicicleta la scoala.
    - pentru o actiune trecuta scurta care a intrerupt o actiune trecuta in desfasurare, exprimata prin Past Continuou (for a
    past short action which interruoted an action in development in the past):
    Mum was cooking (Past Continuous) when I phoned (Past Simple) her. – Mama gatea cand eu am sunat-o.

    EXPRESII

    Yesterday - ieri, yesterday morning/afternoon/evening; last night/week/month/year; a(n) hour/week/month/year ago;


    two/three/four hours/weeks/months/years ago; just now; when; in+year (in 1980, in 1975); in +month (in July); on+ date (on
    26th Decmber), etc.

    1. verbele terminate in CONSOANA + Y formeaza PAST SIMPLE in IED (Y devine I): COPY – COPIED, TRY - TRIED
    2. verbele monosilabice sau bisilabice terminate in VOCALA + CONSOANA dubleaza consoana: STOP – STOPPED,
    TRAVEL – TRAVELLED
    3. verbele terminate in – E adauga doar D

    USED TO – a obisnuit sa (obiceiuri/stari din trecut care nu mai sunt valabile in present)
    Afirmativ: S+ used to + V:
    Jane used to ride a bike when she was younger. (She doesn’t do it anymore.)
    Negativ: S+ did not/didn’t use to + V
    Mary didn’t use to sing in the past. (Now she is doing it every day)
    Interogativ: Did+S+use to+V?
    Did Jim use to play football when he was younger?
    Yes, he did./ No, he didn’t.

    Pentru o actiune in desfasurare intr-un moment defint din trecut. Nu se stie cand actiunea a inceput:
    She was cooking dinner at two o'clock in the afternoon. – Ea gatea cina la ora doua dupa amiaza.
    Doua sau mai multe actiuni in desfasurare in acelasi timp in trecut (actiuni simultane):
    Dad was washing the car while the children were cutting the grass. – Tata spala masina in timp ce copii taiau iarba.
    Pentru a descrie atmosfera si a oferi informatii despre fundalul unei povesti:
    The sun was shining and the birds were singing that spring morning in New Orleans. - Soarele stralucea si pasarile cantau in acea dimineata de primavara.
    Pentru o actiune in desfasurare in trecut, intrerupta de o actiune trecuta scurta. Actiunea in desfasurare este exprimata prin past continuous si
    actiunea care a intrerupt-o este exprimata prin past simple.
    Mary was having (Past Continuous) a shower when the phone rang (Past Simple). – Mari facea un dus cand a sunat telefonul.

    PAST CONTINUOUS

    - while (in timp ce) + Past Continuous
    - while (in timp ce) – pentru actiuni simltane
    - as (in timp ce) – pentru actiuni simultane
