Lesson Title: Gratitude and Guidance Materials: SAS

Lesson Objectives: At the end of the session, I should be
able to reflect on my experiences of gratitude to help guide References: None
my decisions in the future.

A. CONNECT (5 mins)

Hello there! What a great day to start, right? Have you ever thought of the
things that you are grateful for? If not yet, let us do a short activity by
following the instructions below:

Instructions: Think of the top three (3) things that you are grateful for by
writing it in a small piece of paper. After doing that, find a safe place where
you can put it or make it safe like a jar, box or empty drawers. After a month
or year, try to read it again and realize how much you are blessed during
those days.
This will be very exciting!

B. COACH (THINK & DO) (45 mins)

Gratitude means the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return
kindness to others. In this session, you will be given a chance to think about what you're
thankful for and reflect on all that has happened to shape you into the person you are now.

Activity 1: STOP LIGHT

See the image of the stoplight below? Each circle will represent the following categories: Stop,
Wait, and Go.

● Stop: Negative thoughts and feelings that you wish would go away.
● Wait: Thoughts and feelings that you’ve set aside or haven’t decided on yet.
● Go: Thoughts and feelings that show what you’re grateful for and wish to have more of.

Think about the feelings you have and how they fit with the categories listed above. Then, write
your feelings inside the matching circle.

There are no right or wrong answers so write as freely as you can.

Overthinking stuff that you do not have control over.

Do not be overcome with thinking of the unsure future instead think of the present.

Should I proceed to medicine or not?

I’m grateful for the supportive family and friends.

I hope that my dog will live longer.
I love how I continue to study even if certain circumstances have come my way.

Duration: 30 mins

Answer the questions below in the space provided. You can write in sentences or bullet points. If
you choose to draw/doodle your answer, feel free to do so.

1. What made you decide to “stop”, “wait”, and “go”?

2. How do these different feelings affect what you do and think? How does it affect how you
treat others? How do you treat yourself?
3. How did you pick the things you were grateful for?
4. Who were the people behind the thing you are grateful for?

1. What made you decide to “stop”, “wait”, and “go”?

I decided to “stop” because it’s not benefitting me at all rather it weighed me down and made me sad. I decided to “wait” because
I don’t have the resources yet to enroll into medicine. I decided to “go” because it pushed me to do better and strive harder in my
studies and in life.
2. How do these different feelings affect what you do and think? How does it affect how you
treat others? How do you treat yourself?
If I’m feeling sad, I wouldn’t be able to do things properly and efficiently and if I’m feeling happy, I would complete my tasks on time
and be able to do more work. If I feel good, I can talk to others effortlessly but if I don’t, I tend to stay inside my room and not
interact with others. I usually do good stuff if I feel good but if I don’t I just stay on my bed all day.
3. How did you pick the things you were grateful for?
If it made me happy and made me learn things in life those things are what I’m grateful for.
4. Who were the people behind the thing you are grateful for?
My family, friends, classmates and instructors.
5. What would you like to say to these people?
I’m very thankful by your existence and the things that you’ve shared with me. May God bless you and stay safe always.
6. What else can you do to find things you can be grateful for?
I should appreciate more the little things in life.

Activity 2: GRATITUDE BOX (15 minutes)

1. Find a box. (If you can’t find one, you can make one, or, use an envelope.)
2. Think of all the things you’re grateful for on THIS particular day. It can be big or small — just
make sure you concentrate on this day.
3. Put the pieces of paper inside the box or envelope.
4. Next, think about the things you were grateful for on this day LAST WEEK. Do the same with
the pieces of paper.
5. Do this again for things that you were grateful for LAST YEAR. Place the pieces of paper
inside the gratitude box.
