CE 2404 - PRESTRESSED CONCRETE STRUCTURES

Semester / Year: VII / IV Max. Marks: 50

Duration: 1½Hrs

PART A (5 X 2 = 10)

1. Define load bearing concept.

2. Differentiate an RCC element and PSC element

3. List the advantages of composite constructions.

4. Why is it important to control deflections in prestressed concrete members?

5. Differentiate bonded and non-bonded pre stressed concrete.

PART-B (4X10=40)

Answer any four

1. An unsymmetrical I section girder simply supported over a span of 8m and is subjected to a

live load of 2KN/m. The top flange of the section is 300 X 60 mm. The web dimension is 80 X
380 mm and the bottom flange is 100 mm X 60 mm. An effective prestressing force of 100 KN
is acting at 20 mm from the bottom of the section. Find the resultant stress at mid-span of the
section.

2. A pre-tensioned concrete member 200 mm wide and 300 mm deep is pre-stressed by 10

numbers of 7 mm dia wires which are initially stressed at 1200 N/mm2 with their centroids
located 100 mm from the soffit. Find the maximum stress in concrete immediately after transfer
allowing only the elastic shortening of concrete.

If the concrete undergoes a further shortening due to preplanned shrinkage, when there is a
relaxation of 5% of steel stress. find the % loss of steel. use IS 1343-1980.

Es =210 X 103 N/mm2

Ec=35 X 103 N/mm2

Φ = 1.6

Strain = 3 X 104

Fck = 42 N/mm2.

3. A post tensioned beam with an unbounded tendon is of rectangular cross-section 400 mm wide
and 800 mm effective depth. the c/s area of prestressing steel is 2840 mm 2 .the effective
prestressing steel after the losses is 900 N/mm2.the effective span of the beam is 16m , Fck = 40
N/mm2.calculate the ultimate flexural strength of the beam using IS 1343-1980.

4. A pre tensioned prestressed concrete beam of rectangular section is required to support a

design ultimate moment of 100 KN-m. design the section if Fck = 50 N/mm2 and Fcp = 1600
N/mm2 assume breadth of the section is half the depth.x u/d = 0.5. Satisfy IS 1343-1980
requirements.

5. Write in detail about post tensioned pre stressed concrete bridge decks.
and pre tensioned pre stressed concrete bridge decks.
6. Write about the advantages and applications of prestressed concrete.
