Brainstorming for Research Topics
Quarter 1-Week 1
I. Introductory Concept
In this learning activity sheet, the learners will prepare a plan and
focus on issues and ideas in their respective field after an overview of
research, the difference between the qualitative and quantitative research,
importance of research in daily life and learning an appropriate research
design for a class research agenda.
II. Learning Competency
Prepares a plan and a focus on issues and ideas in their respective field.
III. Activities
Let Us Study!
Research - a careful study that is done to find and report new
knowledge about something; an investigation or experimentation aimed at
the discovery and interpretation of facts, revision of accepted theories or
laws in the light of new facts, or practical application of such new or revised
theories or laws; the practice of collecting information about a particular
subject
Research provides the best solution to some of the world problems
and also enhances the knowledge of the researchers. It can give
explanations to certain questions stated in the research problem. Through
the explanations, it serves as a tool for building knowledge and for
facilitating new learning.
Research also introduces new ideas, helps the researchers identify
problems and appropriate solutions in new ways and provide new
framework to guide thinking and action. It informs action, proves a theory
and contributes to develop knowledge in a field or study. Therefore, it
understands various issues and increases public awareness.

The following shall help you recall some significant details relevant to
your previous understanding about the types of research namely
qualitative and quantitative researches.

QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

1. Involves processes, feelings, and motives

(the why’s and the how’s) and produce in-
depth and holistic data
2. Usually concerned with generating
hypothesis from data rather than testing a
hypothesis
3. Uses either unstructured or semi-
structured instruments
4. Uses small sample sizes chosen purposely
5. Has high validity
6. Used to gain greater understanding of
individual differences in terms of feelings,
motives and experiences
7. Uses more flexible processes
8. Methods include field research, case study
and secondary analysis

QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

1. Aims to characterized patterns and trends

2. Usually starts neither with a theory or
hypothesis about the relationship between
two or more variables
3. Uses structured research instruments like
questionnaires or schedules
4. Uses large sample sizes that are
representatives of the population
5. Has high output replicability
6. Used to gain greater understanding of
group similarities
7. Uses structured processes
8. Methods include census, survey,
experiments and secondary analysis

Some considerations in crafting a research design:

1. A good research design provides a plan of study

that permits accurate assessment of cause and effect
relationships between independent and dependent
variables.

2. It must be flexible, appropriate, efficient, and

economical.

3. A design which minimizes bias and maximizes the

reliability of the data collected and analyzed is
considered a good design.

4. Direct observation and creative- centric group

discussion are best employed in deciding on a final
concept.

The following are the things that may be

considered before starting the research activity:

1. A problem that is most interesting to you.

2. Existing problems in the

classroom/school/campus/university which one may
want to solve.

3. Existing needs of the community or society

4. Area of interest, specialization or event from

related fields

5. Offshoots of friendly conversations

6. Observations, intuitions or a combination of both

7. The type of data you need

8. The participants and sources

9. The location and timescale of the research

10. Prevailing theories and philosophy

3|Page
Suggested topics for a Research
Criteria in Choosing a Research Topic: Study:

1. It should be something new or 1. Animals and Animals Rights

different from what has already been
2. Art and Art History
written about.
2. It must be original. 3. Computers and Computer Science

3. It should be significant to the field of 4. Economics and Business Studies

study or discipline. 5. Education and Schools
4. It must necessarily arouse intellectual
6. English Literature
curiosity.
7. Environmental Studies and Global
5. It should be of researcher’s interest
and researcher must be___ with the Warming
topic. 6. It should be a modest one for a 8. Families, Food and Nutrition
beginner to be carried out within a
limited period of time. 9. Health and Medicine
7. It should be clear, not ambiguous. 10. History
8. It should be specific, not general. 11. The Internet
9. It should consider the training and 12. Marketing and Communications
personal qualifications of the researcher.
13. Politics
10. It should consider the availability of
data involved in the study and the 14. Religion and Beliefs
methods and techniques to be employed
15. Sociology and Social Concerns
in gathering them.
11. It should consider the availability of
effective instruments for gathering the
data and their treatment.
12. It should consider the financial
capacity of the researcher to support the
project.
13. It should consider the time factor
involved in the undertaking.

Here are some examples of possible
basis of issues applicable for
Academic and TVL Tracks. These
are useful in crafting a research
agenda that will lead in the writing
of the title and research problem.

If you already identified the

possible topic in the agenda
of your research study you
may think of the identity of
your research either a
qualitative or a quantitative
research then decide on the
methodology by not
disregarding the importance
of your research to others,
to the community, to the
society or to the nation as
well.
