Have you ever thought about the importance of our voice regarding our nations’ problems? As we
already know Romania is a democratic country and people have the right to vote, but is that enough
for the politicians to hear our choices and desires? In my opinion only the right to vote does not make
the population’s voice heard clearly enough for changes to be made because it limits our choices to
only some options and in many cases those are not even close enough to accomplish our goals.
But why is so vital to make our voice heard, you may ask, well, let’s take a look back 30-40 years ago.
The communist regime was in its prime in our country and people did not have a choice but to comply
with the rules that the regime applied, and that led the people into fear, depression but also terror of
doing something wrong and being punished unlawfully for each and every minor mistake. But even in
its prime, the communist party managed to be taken down by whom you my ask, by the people, the
entire nation that came together to accomplish something bigger than themselves and to assure a
future for their children and grandchildren. The communist party fell because of the deadliest weapon
that all people possess, their voice and especially their voice united. So in case we don’t want to be led
again by people who want to suppress our voice we need to rise and work together in order to
guarantee that.
Many might ask how we can nowadays make a stand, and the answer is easy: Just learn how to
express your problems and manifest your desires. Thanks to our ancestors, we now possess the right
to protest. Some think, however, that this is just a common right for the 21 stcentury. I am so sorry to
disappoint you but it’s not. While it’s true that a majority of countries possess this right, many others,
including China, Cuba, and Vietnam do not.
In the last 10 years protesters in Romania managed to change government policies, including revoking
unlawful laws that were issued, and through strikes the working class managed to receive what they
desired in some cases higher pay-checks, more days off and many more and all of them just by
standing firm and making their voice heard.
In order to assure the future that we want for our children, we need to continue to speak out no
matter what, we need to make sure to teach the young generation of the significance of their voice
and the power that they collectively possess.
To conclude my speech I would like to say that even through the toughest of times people managed to
succeed by using the power of their voice and so why couldn’t we if we found ourselves in hard times?
