A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN ENGLISH V

I. OBJECTIVES:
 Identify and define the elements of a story:
Plot, setting, characters, problem, solution, and theme.
II. SUBJECT MATTER: Elements of the Story
REFERENCE: Scribd.com, kidsworldfun.com/shortstories_lionandmouse.php
MATERIALS: Pictures, Laptop, Projector, Visual Aids, Printed Hand-outs, Manila paper, Marker
III. PROCEDURE:
A. Preparatory activities:

a. Review
Have a quick review about fantasy and reality. Let the learners guess the
example given:

1. The bamboo tree dance as the wind touches it.


2. The moon smiled at me.
3. My mother cooked my favorite chicken adobo.
4. The alligator played football.
5. The fairy grant me a wish.
6. The girl drove a scooter on her way to school.
7. The cat meowed.
8. The bird fly so high on the sky.
9. My two months old baby sister walk.
10. The pizza is calling my name.

b. Motivation

Show a picture of a forest and let the learners share their ideas about the picture. Ask
the learners a few questions.

1. Have you been in the forest?


2. What do you usually see in the forest?
3. Are there many wild animals in the forest? Name some of the wild animals inside
the forest?
4. Who is the king of the forest?
5. Have you seen a lion in real life?

B. PRESENTATION:

Let the learners read a short story about “The lion and the mouse” and let them
identify its story elements.

 Unlocking of difficulties

1. Caught – Capture (a person or animals that tries or would try to escape).


2. Frightened – Afraid or anxious.
3. Begged – Ask (someone) humbly for something (typically food or money, as
charity or a gift).
4. Repay – To pay back.
5. Tiny – Very small.
6. Released – To set free from restraint or confinement.
7. Sharp – Adapted to cutting or piercing: such as having a thin keen edge or fine
point.

“The lion and the mouse”

One afternoon, in the middle of the forest, a lion was sleeping under the shade of a
tree. Suddenly, a playful mouse came out to play. He ran all over the body of the lion.
The lion woke up not in the mood and caught the mouse. The tiny mouse was frightened
and begged for forgiveness. The mouse promised to the lion that he will repay his
kindness one day. The lion forgave the mouse. But wondered how the tiny mouse can
help. One day, a hunter trapped the lion with a net. The lion was looking for help, but
nobody helped. The mouse came and offered to help. He released the lion by biting the
net using his sharp teeth. The lion thanked the mouse for helping him. Since then, they
became a good friends.

Comprehension Questions:
1. What are the animals in the story?
2. Where do you think the story happen?
3. What is the reaction of the lion when the mouse crawl in his body?

A. CHARACTERS: The lion and the mouse


B. SETTING: One afternoon, in the middle of the forest.
C. PLOT:
 Beginning: One afternoon, in the middle of the forest, a lion was sleeping under the
shade of a tree.
 Middle: One day, a hunter trapped the lion with a net. The lion was looking for help,
but nobody helped.
 Ending: The lion thanked the mouse for helping him. Since then, they became a good
friends.

D. CONFLICT:
Problem
1. The mouse was about to get eaten.
2. The lion got caught in a trap made of net.
Solution
1. The mouse says he will be able to help the lion.
2. The mouse bites the net with his sharp teeth.
E. THEME: It doesn’t matter how big or small you are, you can still help others
and be friends.

C. DISCUSSION:

Question: What are the elements of the story?

1. PLOT – The actions or events that take place in a story. It has the beginning, middle
and the ending events.
2. SETTING – The place and time, where and when the story happens.
3. CHARACTERS – The people, animals, or other creatures in the story.
4. CONFLICT – Is the problem which the main characters need to solve.
5. THEME – The message or the lesson of the story.
IV. GUIDED PRACTICE:

Group the learners into two. Let the learners read the story of the “The little red riding
hood” and let them identify the elements of the story.

“The little Red Riding Hood”

Little Red Riding Hood was going to her Granny’s house. A big bad wolf heard about
this. He quickly ran to Granny’s house. He locked Granny in a cupboard. The wolf
dressed like Granny and got into her bed. Later in the afternoon, Red Riding Hood arrived
and saw Granny on the bed. She thought to herself, that Granny looks different. The wolf
could not wait any longer. He jumped out of the bed and tried to grab Red Riding Hood.
She screamed loudly. During that time, a woodcutter was in the woods and heard her
screams. He ran toward to the house. He hit the wolf hard and the wolf ran away. He let
Granny out of the cupboard. Little Red Riding Hood and Granny thanked the woodcutter.
They never saw the big bad wolf ever again.

ACTIVITY: LET’S PLAY, GROW AND LEARN TOGETHER!

setting, character, conflict and theme of the story.

3. The elephants and the ants

VIII. ASSIGNMENT
Let your learners recall their favorite story and let them identify the plot, setting,
characters, conflict and theme of the story.
