Injury and Surgery: Tadasana (Mountain Pose) should not be done by people with knee
and ankle injuries. It should also be avoided by people who have undergone knee,
hip, and spinal surgeries. This pose requires standing for some time and this is
strenuous for such people and may further cause damage.
Lack of Body-Breath Connections: Beginners may find it difficult to even stand
straight with their feet close to each other. People who lack breath body
connection can do this pose with the yoga teacher’s guidance. Either they can
initially start with Mountain Pose Variation Feet Hip Wide (Tadasana Variation Feet
Hip Wide) or Mountain Pose Wall (Tadasana Wall). Mountain Pose Block Between Feet
(Tadasana Block Between Pada) is another variation which helps them to understand
body alignment and support their feet.
Physical Strength and Weak Body: Students with weak knees and ankles should avoid
directly getting into Tadasana (Mountain Pose). The yoga teacher needs to guide
them on knee and ankle strengthening and then initiate the pose. Seated Ankle
Rotations (Upavistha Goolf Chakra) is a good ankle strengthening pose and Seated
Knee Bending will strengthen their knees. People with vertigo, a migraine, low or
high blood pressure also should avoid this pose. Such ailments cause dizziness and
this pose can bring more discomfort or pain if the balance is a challenge. Knee
locking can be challenging for some people and the yoga teacher can guide them with
Knee Exercise Knee Cap Pulled Close Up.
Others: Senior citizens and Pregnant women may have balancing issues. Pregnant
women may feel an imbalance, due to the weight of the womb and seniors due to
weakness, etc. Mountain Pose Variation Feet Hip Wide (Tadasana Variation Feet Hip
Wide) or Mountain Pose Wall (Tadasana Wall) are good alternatives for them. The
balance increases with wider feet and the wall support is reassuring and supports
the back.
Therapy and Restorative: Though Herniated Discs, Scoliosis and Kyphosis spinal
disorders can be corrected by this pose, yoga teachers need to rule out vertigo,
migraine, low or high blood pressure in such patients to avoid falling due to
imbalance. Such patients can be encouraged to do seated spinal exercises.
Vrikshasana Contraindications:
Vrksasana can be challenging to many at the initial disturbing the flow of energy
in the body. Hence has to be done with proper care and with clear instructions.
However, there are many precautions to keep in mind during the teaching of this
pose, and these are explained below:
Injury and Surgery: Being a hip opener, that also puts pressure on the knees, ankle
and shoulders, students with any kind of injury related to these joints should
completely avoid this practice. Moreover, if students are recovering from a recent
surgery related to any part of the joints mentioned above, or even related to a
surgery to any internal organ, then they should refrain from the practice of this
pose. However, using a chair, a block can be considered, provided the student is
comfortable with balancing.
Ailment and Physical Strength: Since this pose demands some basic strength in the
muscles of the legs, hips, and back, students with issues related to the physical
body should take it slow or even avoid this practice. A few conditions like
vertigo, a migraine, arthritis in the hips or knees, history of a hip replacement,
or any other condition that is contraindicated, should be considered during the
practice of Tree Pose. Additionally, those who are recovering from a long disease
or ailment and were confined to their bed for long, then starting them with
balancing poses like these should be done with care and precaution.
Lack of Body-Breath Connections: Vrksasana demands awareness and focus. Without
proper knowledge of body-breath connection, the practice may bring disturbance in
the energy levels and defeat the purpose of the practice, completely. Hence, unless
the students are completely ready, they should not be introduced to this practice.
However, the easy Beginner Tree Pose can be considered, with very clear
instructions.
Others: Although senior citizens can practice this pose, care should be taken to
guide them with clear instructions. Initially the use of a wall or chair should be
encouraged. Additionally, included in prenatal yoga sequences, care should be taken
to avoid holding the posture longer. When included in peak pose yoga sequences,
care should be taken to ensure the body is warmed up well enough, including
bringing breath awareness.
People with asthma problems and heart ailments should never perform this pose.
If you have severe headache issues with migraine, kindly refrain from performing
the procedure of naukasana.
Patients with low blood pressure should never do naukasana yoga poses without
consulting their physician.
Spinal disorders and other chronic illnesses can aggravate due to this yoga
posture.
Women should never perform the procedure of naukasana during their menstrual cycle
and pregnancy.
