BE - SEMESTER– VII (NEW) EXAMINATION – WINTER 2021
Subject Code:2170901 Date:29/11/2021
Subject Name:Interconnected Power System
Time:02:30 PM TO 05:00 PM Total Marks: 70
Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks.
4. Simple and non-programmable scientific calculators are allowed.

MARKS
Q.1 (a) Explain the concept of interconnection. State its advantages in brief 03
(b) What is load flow study? What kind of information is obtained from load flow 04
study?
(c) What is cascade tripping and network islanding? Also explain the functions 07
carried out by various load dispatch centres

Q.2 (a) Explain the meaning of graph, tree and link. What do you understand by 03
primitive network?
(b) Explain how buses are classified in power systems? 04
(c) The line resistances and reactances for a 4-bus system are given in table below. If 07
the line between bus-1 and bus-2 is not connected find YBUS matrix
Line (bus to bus) Resistance R (pu) Reactance X (pu)
1-2 0.05 0.15
1-3 0.10 0.30
2-3 0.15 0.45
2-4 0.10 0.30
3-4 0.05 0.15
If the line between bus-1 and bus-2 is connected find the new YBUS matrix.
OR
(c) In FDLF method, which elements of Jacobian are set to zero? Give reasons 07
for the same. In a typical power system, if the self susceptance Bii >> Qi,
prove that
𝜕𝑃𝑖
= -|Vi|Bii
𝜕𝛿 𝑖

Q.3 (a) State the assumptions made in approximate load flow method 03
(b) Give reasons for the following (i) Bus admittance matrix is a sparse matrix 04
(ii) An acceleration factor is commonly used in load flow for GS method
(c) Compare NR and GS method of load flow 07
OR
Q.3 (a) Explain why frequency control is important? What are the targeted limits 03
within which frequency is to be maintained? Which power system component
is most adversely affected due to frequency deviation?
(b) On a system consisting of two generating plants, the incremental costs in Rs/MWhr 04
with P1 and P2 in MW are
dC1/dP1 = 0.16P1 + 32
dC2/dP2 = 0.24P2 + 36
The system is operating on economic dispatch with P1 = P2 = 100 MW and δPL/δP2
= 0.2. Find the penalty factor of plant 1.

1
(c) Derive the expression for B-loss co-efficients for a two plant power system. 07
Explain why their unit is MW-1

Q.4 (a) What is flat frequency control method for regulating frequency within limits? 03
(b) Derive the criteria for most economic dispatch when transmission losses are 04
neglected
(c) Explain how frequency control is achieved by hydraulic servomotor, fly balls and 07
linkage mechanism
OR
Q.4 (a) Define steady state and transient stability 03
(b) Explain equal area criteria of stability. 04
(c) Two 50 MW generators operate in parallel. The settings of the governors are 07
such that the rise in speed from full load to no-load is 2% in one machine in
3% in another. If each machine is fully loaded when the total load is 100 MW,
what would be the load on each machine when the load is 60 MW?

Q.5 (a) Give the relation between inertia constant H and angular momentum M. State their 03
significance.
(b) What is synchronizing coefficient? How does it help in determining system 04
stability
(c) Discuss numerical solution of swing equation using point by point method 07
OR
Q.5 (a) Explain the terms critical clearing angle and critical clearing time in connection 03
with transient stability of a power system.
(b) A synchronous generator delivers power to an infinite bus. Suddenly the fuel 04
input to the system is increased. Explain using the equal area criteria as to how the
system would respond to this disturbance. Hence find the maximum limit to which
fuel input can be increased without the system going out of synchronism.
(c) A 50Hz, 100 MVA, 4-pole synchronous generator has an inertia constant of 07
3.5s and is supplying 0.16 pu power on a system base of 500 MVA. The
input to the generator is increased to 0.18 pu. Determine (i) the kinetic
energy stored in moving parts of the generator (ii) the acceleration of the
generator. If the acceleration is maintained for 7.5 cycles, calculate (iii) the
change in rotor angle, and (iv) the speed in rpm at the end of acceleration
