1. PURPOSE

To determine the bond strength properties of bonded EPDM granules with a specific type and
percentage of Polyurethane Binder used.

2. SCOPE

This is applicable to any staff from Fairmont Industries who wish to perform EPDM granule
bond strength properties for quality control checking, product improvement, or product
development.

3. REFFERENCES

3.1 This SOP is adapted from F1-QM (Quality Manual). Any procedure outlined as follow are
only intended for internal use.

4 MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT NEEDED

- 200 gram of EPDM Granules (Subjected to Color and Size)
- 40 gram of Polyurethane Binder (PU) (20% wt. of EPDM granules)
- Steel/wooden frame mold (100mm x 150mm x 10mm)
- Steel trowel (for casting) and soap solution (release agent)
- Wood wax
- Universal Testing Machine (UTM).

5 PROCEDURE

5.1 SPECIMEN PREPARATION

5.1.1 In a plastic bag, weigh 200g of granule sample.

5.1.2 Pour 20g of PU binder into the plastic bag containing the EPDM.
5.1.3 Mix the EPDM granules and PU binder homogeneously.
5.1.4 Apply a thin layer of wood wax on the surface of the working table and on the inner
layer of the steel/wooden frame mold.
5.1.5 Pour the mixture into the mold and cast the mixture with even pressure and compaction
using a steel trowel.
5.1.6 Occasionally, clean the steel trowel with soap solution to remove any EPDM granule
stuck on the surface of the trowel, which can disturb the process of smooth finishing.
5.1.7 Inspect the finish surface for any imperfections.
5.1.8 Let the bonded granules (Figure 1) cure for at least 24 hours before the next procedure.
5.1.9 Cut the at least 3 set of bonded granules according to the dimension in the Figure 2 and
ready to conduct the bond strength test using the UTM.

5.2 Bond Strength Test Procedure (UTM)

5.2.1 Switch on the Zwick Roell Universal Testing Machine (UTM). Make sure the safety
switch is turned to ‘test’ located on the bottom-right-hand side of the control panel (Refer
Figure 3).
5.2.2 Place the test specimen into the clamp and manage the extensometer clamp onto the test
specimen. (Refer Figure 4).
