Abstract
Since the era has become more modern, the development of technology and
science and human civilization has also progressed. Many cultures have
influenced each other, even mixed with each other. One of the cultures that is rife
in Indonesia is the influence of East Asian culture in obtaining instant beauty,
such as South Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, Myanmar and Singapore. The
instant way is done through plastic surgery. Many people are dissatisfied with the
gift of beauty given to them, so they want to change whatever they feel is lacking
or even bad. Therefore, they often spend money to do plastic surgery. Plastic
surgery in some countries is justified, but it is different in our country, Indonesia.
In Indonesia, it is still rare for people to be willing to spend money to do plastic
surgery, even plastic surgery is very rarely found. Moreover, Indonesia's majority
population is Muslim. Islam has also determined the plastic surgery law.
Especially when the operation is done to change God's creation. Scholars have
also argued about the law of plastic surgery which is considered to change God's
creation.
Keywords: Beauty, Plastic Surgery, Islamic Law.
Introduction
Al-Qur'an is the word of Allah revealed through the intermediary of the prophet
Muhammad SAW. Allah revealed the Qur'an to mankind with the aim of making
it a guide for Muslims in carrying out the teachings of Muslims. It contains the
call for monotheism or faith since the sending of the prophet Adam AS until the
sending of the last prophet Muhammad SAW. With that, the Qur'an becomes the
eternal miracle of Islam and its miracles are always strengthened by the progress
of science. In the Qur'an also discussed various kinds of problems of the people in
all fields. One of them is about beauty.
It is stated in the Qur'an that every human being must worship Allah, as a
form of gratitude for Allah's creation to humans. Allah has created all the beauty
that exists on this earth, none other than aiming to meet the needs of His creatures.
Maintaining grace and beauty includes worship, because in essence Allah SWT
loves beauty.
Beauty in Islam is true beauty and the ideal of beauty that comes from the
heart. But not infrequently people define the word "beautiful" only limited to
physical beauty. So many people are competing to be "beautiful", and
unfortunately it is intended for physical needs only, not physically and mentally.
Most people say that beauty has two divisions, namely outer beauty and inner
beauty . External beauty concerns the physical, such as skin, face and shape. Inner
beauty is related to the whole personality and psychic-spiritual dimensions and is
more enduring in nature.
The concept of beauty is certainly different depending on the perception of
the person who sees it. It is possible that in one area to another, have different
standards of beauty. The concept of Asian women's beauty tends to have the
physical characteristics of a round face, olive skin, slanted eyes, a wide nose and
black hair. In this modern era, the beauty center of Asian women leads to the
country of Ginseng, namely South Korea, thin faces, white and smooth skin, long
legs, small and sharp noses owned by Korean women make Asian women in other
countries, especially Indonesia also want to have the concept beauty like Korean
women.
The conflict caused by the desire to have a beauty concept like Korean
women, namely, wanting to get beauty instantly. So that not a few of the women
who are even willing to do expensive treatments to change the shape of the body
that has been given by God for permanent beauty. Such as plastic surgery,
eyebrow embroidery, lip embroidery, whitening injections and so on. Even though
changing God's creation, especially in an instant way, has a negative impact on
those who do it, such as causing allergies, irritation and so on. In addition, the law
is also forbidden in Islam.
As mentioned in the prophet traditional narrated by Muslim and Ibn
Mas'ud that: Verily Allah is beautiful and loves beauty. Beauty that is pleasing to
Allah is pure beauty. Humans have the right to change things to be more beautiful
with nature and there are limits. Especially in changing what is in humans. God
has bestowed perfection in human beings that need to be grateful for and guarded.
But as is the case today, most people misunderstand this hadith. Especially
in terms of changing one member of the body in the sense of beautifying and
maintaining God's gift with the aim of making its own attraction to the views of
others. It is undeniable that many people want changes to fulfill their perfect
physical form and fulfill their desires.
Therefore, in this journal we will discuss the concept of beauty in the
Qur'an and the law of changing Allah's creation with the aim of beautifying and
beautifying His grace.
CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION
A. Meaning of Beauty
1. The Meaning of Beauty in General
Beauty is taken from the Latin, yaitu bellus. In the Cambridge
Learner’s Dictionary Beauty is the quality of being pleasing, especially to
look at, or someone or something that gives great pleasure, especially by
being looked at. Beautiful is very attractive, very pleasant, very kind;
beautiful people “fashionable or rich people”.
The concept of beauty is always associated with women, because
women are more synonymous with beauty and perfection, especially in
women's body and physical parts. So there is no question that in this day
and age women are competing to take care of their bodies from the
outside, and ignore the quality of themselves from within, for example
intelligence, unique personality, and so on.1
In doing physical treatment, between women with each other they
tend to compete with each other to be the best and the most beautiful
among others. This is done not only to attract the attention of the opposite
sex, but also to give yourself satisfaction when you get compliments from
others about their physical appearance.
Beauty is like a myth and legend. Various stories about women
who are beautiful and feminine are immortalized in various forms around
us. The stories in romance novels and romantic films are always followed
by the figures of the players who are described as having a charming
appearance. Actually, there is no standard definition of the meaning of
female beauty, therefore, as mentioned above, beauty is like a myth and a
legend means that there is no definite definition of the meaning of the
words beautiful and beauty.2
In different parts of the world there are different criteria for beauty.
These criteria arise from men's desire for things that make them attracted

to a woman. For example, a beautiful woman in Japan is a woman who has
smooth skin and long hair, in Myanmar and Thailand beautiful women are
those who have a long neck and in Iran beautiful women are those who
have sharp and petite noses, as well as in several other countries including
In Indonesia, one of the criteria for beauty is have a slim body. Although
different parts of the world have their own criteria for beauty, there are
some similarities about beauty in various countries, namely thick lips,
clean and smooth white skin, clear eyes, shiny hair, slim body, and firm
skin.
How women judge their bodies will be closely related to how the
social and cultural environment outside of themselves judges women's
bodies. This means that women will always try to adjust their body shape
to the social and cultural words of society about the concept of beauty. But
now the mass media that penetrated various cultures have changed the
image of women's beauty in these cultures. One of the characteristics of
modern beauty is a slim body (Mulyana, 2005).
The beauty myth that perceives women ultimately leads to many
socially constructed conceptions related to the meaning of beauty whose
definition tends to be based on purely physical analysis. A beautiful
woman's body, apart from her facial beauty, is also synonymous with
white, smooth and toned skin, her curvy body shape shows the perfect
plumpness of certain organs (especially the chest and hips), sensual lips,
and other descriptions, which are principles related to all organs of the
body women, from head to toe.
2. The Meaning of Beauty in the Perspective of the Qur'an
In Islam, the notion of beauty is true and ideal beauty, beauty that
comes from the heart. Beauty is divided into two, first: external beauty,
namely physical beauty, and all parts of the body that are visible to
humans. Second: beauty from within, which is related to personality and
psychic-spiritual dimensions and is more enduring in nature. Beauty from
within cannot be seen with the naked eye, unlike beauty from without.
Beauty in Arabic is called al-jamal and al-husn. In the Arabic-
Indonesian dictionary by Mahmud Yunus, al-jamal means grace, beauty.
And al-husn means goodness, kindness. According to Ibn Sayyidah and
Ibn Kathir, al-jamal is beauty that is found in behavior and spiritual
appearance. While al-husn is the opposite of the word al-qabh as the word
of Allah SWT which means: "He created the heavens and the earth with
truth. He shaped your likeness and made your appearance beautiful, and to
Allah you will return.” In the Qur'an there are many verses that explain
about women, jewelry, and tabarruj including Al-Ahzab verse 52, Al-Kahf
verse 28 and 46, An-Nur verse 31 and 60, and Al-A'raf verse 31. The
many verses of the Qur'an that describe women show how much Islam
cares for women and glorifies them.3
In the book Mu'jam Alfaz Al-Qur'an (encyclopedia of words of the
Qur'an) the first volume published by Majma' al-Lugah al-Arabiyyah
(Arabic language council), it is stated that the meaning of beauty is
elegance, refinement, and grace. beauty. There are also those who interpret
beauty as a beautiful sensory (visible) or meaningful state that invites
someone to accept something well from things that encourage the soul to
like and love it .
Beauty does not only apply to humans, but also to animals and
plants, because this beauty also applies to charity. And not infrequently
beauty and beauty is in words, actions, meanings, and various other things
that speak with character and character. Therefore, it is natural that the
Qur'an does not mention facial beauty or physical appearance, either male
or female, except only twice. At the first mention Allah warns Prophet
Muhammad not to be deceived by the physical appearance of the
hypocrites, because often physical appearance does not inform about
essence .
In the Qur'an the word beautiful refers to the word jamal ( )مجل
3
Fariskha Wulandari, p.16.
A'raf, (7): 40. Another word that is cognate with jamal is Jamalun ()مجال
which is mentioned 1 time, which is contained in (Surah Nahl [16]: 6). The
[12: 8, 83) (Surat al-Ahzab [33]: 28, 49) (QS, al-Ma'aarij [70]:5 ) and
(Surat al-Muzammil [73]:10) . The word Jimalat is mentioned once, which
is in (Surat al-Mursalat [77]: 33) and the word Number is mentioned once,
which is in (Surat al-Furqan [25]: 32). According to Raghib al-Ashfahani,
explaining the word jamal which means beauty, the abundance of
goodness, and the word jamal is divided into two, the first is beauty which
is devoted to himself or his body or deeds. And secondly what has come
apart from her and over the beauty of the face.4
Beauty is divided into two, namely physical beauty and non-
physical beauty. Physical beauty is the beauty that we can feel and enjoy in
the world or we feel in the real world. Meanwhile, non-physical beauty is
the beauty that is felt in the hearts of each person, which is not the same or
beauty that cannot be seen but we can feel it in the hereafter.
Physical beauty is found in many verses of the Qur'an including:
(Surat An-Naml [27]: 4), (Surat Ali-Imran [3]: 14), (Surat Al-Baqarah [2]:
212) , (Surat An-Naml [27]: 44,60), (Surat Al-Hijr [15]: 16), (Surat Qaf
[50]: 6-11), (Surat An-Nahl [16]: 5- 6), (Surat al-Kahf [18]: 7-8), (Surat al-
A'raf [7]: 31). Non-physical beauty is found in many verses of the Qur'an
including: QS Al-Hujurat (49): 7, Al-Gasyiyah (88): 8-16, An-Nur (24):
35.
The word jamal and the word ahsan have differences. The word
jamal which means beautiful is aimed at beautiful objects, both face,
temperament, and shape. While the word ahsan which means goodness
that comes from the beauty that is felt then goodness will arise, because
beauty is considered good. The difference between beauty and goodness
itself is that goodness is used for appearance, then it is used for actions and
morals. While the original beauty is used for moral actions and external

beauty, then it is used for appearance. Beauty is deeds, morals, money, and
possessions that make people known.
The difference between al-jamal and al-husn . Al-husn was
originally used to characterize form and physical (form) but later it was
used to characterize behavior or morals. Meanwhile, al-jamal was
originally used to characterize outward behavior, morals, and things, then
it was also used to characterize appearance.5
So beauty is something that makes people famous and their image
uplifted, either because of their behavior, character, wealth or body.

desires, and I will command them so they will slit the ears of cattle, and I
will command them so they will change the creation of Allah." And
whoever takes Satan as an ally instead of Allah has certainly sustained a
clear loss. (An-Nisa'/4:119).
In this verse, the meaning of taghyiir , namely, changing God's
creation can be interpreted as changing something that was created by God
such as castrating animals. There is also a meaning by changing the

religion of Allah. It is also mentioned in the dictionary, that the taghyiir
sentence also has the meaning ) )انتقل – لwhich means to change or move.
In Cambridge Learner’s Dictionary, the word ‘change’ is mean to
make or become different, or to exchange one thing for another thing,
especially of a similar type. Or ‘alter’ is mean, to change something,
usually slightly, or to cause the characteristics of something to change. Or
‘renew’ the meaning is to increase the life of or replace something old.
That is, is to change everything that was previously ordinary to be more
beautiful or more beautiful afterward. For example in limbs, updating
black skin to white, ugly faces into beautiful, or other body parts that you
want to change from their original shape to other shapes as desired.

truth. [Adhere to] the fitrah of Allah upon which He has created
[all] people. No change should there be in the creation of Allah.
That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.
(Ar-Rum/30:30)
Another reason is that plastic surgery to beautify oneself
belongs to the category of exaggeration. Where Allah SWT does
not like an act that is done excessively , deceiving others, riya' and
immorality which are all contrary to the letter An-Nisa' verse 142 :

Abdul Aziz Dahlan, et al p.214-215

)142 :4
Meaning :
142. Indeed, the hypocrites [think to] deceive Allah, but
He is deceiving them. And when they stand for prayer, they stand
lazily, showing [themselves to] the people and not remembering
Allah except a little, (An-Nisa'/4:142)
While the fiqh experts forbid plastic surgery to
beautify themselves is the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad: "
Allah curses women " those who get tattoos and those who ask for
a tattoo, shave their eyebrows or ask to be shaved, file their teeth
or those who ask to file their teeth to make them beautiful, which
is all that is meant for beauty by changing Allah's creation ”
(Narrated by Ahmad, al-Bukhari, Muslim, At-T i rmidhi, Abu
Dawud, Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah) 12.
Another narration, Rasulullah SAW said: " From Hashim,
he said that: Fatimah bin Munzhir told me from Asma ', that a
woman came to the Prophet SAW, then she said to the Messenger
of Allah, "O Messenger of Allah, indeed my son is getting
married, he is sick so his hair falls out, can I tie his hair?" The
Prophet replied, "Allah curse the women who tie their hair."
(Narrated by Al-Bukhari, Muslim, and Nasa'i)13.
2. Leave scars
Performing surgery is very clear that surgery will be done.
After that, it will also be re-sewn. So, that's where the stitches
that left the wound came from. Although treatment techniques
are used to remove scars, of course it will not be 100% lost.
Like crumpled paper, no matter how well you smooth it, it still
leaves marks and traces of squeezing. So is your skin.
Some other things that can leave scars, namely: boils,
bitten by a dog, the danger of a cat bite.
8. Expensive cost
The cost you have to spend for plastic surgery is certainly
not small. There are many things that you have to fulfill, such
as skin grafting and some complicated procedures. Not to
mention you also have to be ready to bear all the complications
that arise after surgery. Because this operation also has the
possibility to perform a follow-up operation
