TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT

using computer modelling

WHAT IS TRAFFIC
MANAGEMENT?

The control of road traffic using computer

modelling.
We can also say it's an efficient wayb for traffic
signal light control using image processing.
One of the main objectives is to accommodate
traffic safely and efficiently to avoid problems
on the road and cities and to reduce accidents.
We can consider two different methods of
traffic management

(1) Closure of motorway lanes.

(2) Traffic light simulation.
CLOSURE OF MOTORWAY LANES

Means a closure of an individual lane or lanes for the

purpose of the work while maintaining traffic flow in the
direction of travel
The company given the task to carry out this work has to
model the impact of the roadwork on the traffic flow.
They have to model several ways controlling traffic at
first.
The two models shown in pictures will appear on the computer
screen representing the motorway lanes.

The company will rum model A and B using different traffic densities at
different times of the day to see which allows for the best traffic flow.
TRAFFIC LIGHT SIMULATION

In this simulation, it is necessary to consider:

How and what data needs to be collected
How the simulation is carried out
how the system would work in real life
How and what data needs to be collected?
Data needs to be collected by watching traffic
for a long period of time.
It is best done by using induction loop sensors
which count the number of vehicles at ecah road.
Kind of data that needs to be collected

the number of vehicles passing the road in all

directions
how many vehicles build up at the junction at
different times of the day
how long it takes a vehicle to clear the junction
other data needs to be considered
( people crossings roads)
How is the simulation carried out?

Data from the previous list is entered into the computer and the
computer model is run.
After modelling, different scenarios can be tried out.
For example,
Varying the timing of the lights and observing how the traffic
flow was affected
Changing the number of vehicles and timimg of light to see how
the traffic flow is affected
Increasing or decreasing traffic flow in all directions
How would the system work in real life|?

Sensors on the road gathers data and count the numbers of

vehicles
This data is sent to a control box or to a computer.
The gathered data is compared to data stored in the system
The control box is compared to data stored in the system
The control box or computer decides what action needs to be
taken.
Signals are then sent out to the traffic lights to change their
timing if necessary.
CONCLUSION

Computer modelling will provide effective traffic

management by the real time of vehicles and minimize
waiting time at traffic signals. This also helps to find the
path for emergency condition.
