COHESIVE DEVICES
As a writer or a speaker, it is always important that our words or sentences
must relate to each other. This is also known as cohesion. This term comes from
the word cohere which means ‘to stick together’. Coherence can be achieved
using linking words and expressions that help the readers or speakers follow a
certain line of thought from one idea to another.
Cohesive devices, sometimes called linking words, transitional words,
connectors, or linkers, are words or phrases that are used to show relationship
between sentences or paragraphs.1
Moreover, however, on the other hand are some of the examples of
cohesives.
1. Mary, a grade 8 learner of Pavia National High school, got the highest award
in their class. Moreover, she received certificates of recognition from their
local government for being the most responsible student leader in their
batch.
2. Vincent, a thirteen-year-old boy, loves singing very much; however, he has
no confidence in mingling with lots of people.
Based on the given two sentences, moreover is used to add something to

the previous statement. While in the second sentence, however is used to show
contrasting ideas.2
Now, look at the next example.

superb for it was done smoothly.
b. The plot of the story was annoying, but in general it was a good book for

One day, the Magnate family woke up early to prepare themselves for their
trip back to their hometown, a place which every member of the family loves to go.
Mang Tabot, the head of the family, started to check the fuel of the car. (1) [

they might have trouble along the way while Aling Tata, the mother, prepared their
viands and bottled water. The elder son, Bitoy, packed his things and made sure
he brought his earphone and Ipad for he loves music very much. (2) [ Similarly, On
the other hand, Otherwise ] the younger daughter, Bibing, could not find her
favorite sandals (3) [ importantly, in general, because] she forgot where she kept
them. (4) [ As a result, Moreover, Above all ] she took her new slippers sent by her
aunt from California. Aling Tata told her children to be in a hurry for them to enjoy
their trip without being annoyed by the scorching heat of the sun.
While in the middle of their trip, they were amazed of how the sky looked

by the beauty that was beyond compare.
