CIV305 WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING-I

TUTORIAL SHEET

1. Water is pumped out at the rate of 2400 lit/min, from a well of 0.25 m diameter,
penetrating fully in an aquifer of 32 m thickness. The drawdown observed in two adjoining
well at 15 m and 110 m from the pumping well is 7.0 m and 0.5 m, respectively. Determine
the average hydraulic conductivity.

2. Water was pumped out from a well of diameter 1.2 m, from an unconfined aquifer of 50 m
thickness. The well penetrates fully in the aquifer and the depth of water in the well is 40 m.
The effect of pumping was reaching up to a distance of 450 m. Find the discharge if
K= 10 m/day.

3. A tube-well of 20 cm diameter penetrates fully an artesian aquifer of 30 m thickness.

Compute the permeability of the aquifer, if a steady discharge of 40 liter/sec is obtained from
the well under a drawdown of 4 m at the well face. Take radius of influence equal to 245 m.

4. In order to determine the field permeability of free aquifer pumping out test was performed
and following observation were made.
i. Diameter of well = 20 cm
ii. Discharge from the well = 240 m3/hr
iii. R.L. of the original water surface, before pumping started = 240.5 m
iv. R.L. of water in the well at constant pumping = 235.6 m
v. R.L. of impervious layer = 210 m
vi. R.L. of water in observation well = 239.8 m
vii. Radial distance of observation well from the tube well = 50 m
Calculate k, also calculate:
(a) The error in k if observations are not taken in the observation well, and the radius of
influence is assumed to be 300 m.
(b) Actual radius of influence based on the observation well

5. The following observations were made on a 300 mm diameter well penetrating an

unconfined aquifer.
viii. Rate of pumping = 1800 litres/minute
ix. Drawdown in a test well 30 m away = 1.8 m
x. Drawdown in a test well 60 m away = 0.6 m
xi. Depth of water in the well before pumping = 50 m
Determine
(a) The radius of the circle of influence, and
(b) The co-efficient of transmissibility of the aquifer.

6. A gravity well has a diameter of 60 cm. The depth of water in the well is 40 meters before
pumping is started. When pumping is being done at the rate of 2000 liter/ minute the
drawdown in a well 10 meter away is 4 meter and in another well 20 meters away is
2 meter. Determine
i. Radius of zero drawdown
ii. Coefficient of permeability
iii. Drawdown in the well
7. A tube well penetrates fully an unconfined aquifer. Calculate the discharge from the tube
well under the following conditions.
i. Diameter of the well = 300 mm
ii. Drawdown =3m
iii. Effective length of strainer under the above drawdown = 10.5 m
iv. Coefficient of permeability of aquifer = 0.5 mm/s
v. Radius of zero drawdown = 300 m

8. Design a tube well for the following data.

i. Yield required = 0.10 m3/s
ii. Radius of circle of influence = 200 m
iii. Coefficient of permeability = 60 m/day
iv. Drawdown = 6 m
v. Thickness of confined aquifer = 30 m

9. A well penetrates fully a 10 m thick water bearing stratum of medium sand having
coefficient of permeability of 0.004 m/sec. The well radius is 100 mm and is to be worked
under a drawdown of 4 m at the well face. Calculate the discharge from the well. What will
be the percentage increases in the discharge if the radius of well is doubled? Take R= 300 m
in each case.

10. A pumping test was conducted for an open well of diameter 3.5 m. The water was
pumped out at a constant rate of 300 lit/min, fined the specific yield of the well.

11. Design an open well in fine sand to give a discharge of 0.005 cumec. When operated
under a depression head of 3 m.

12. A recuperation test was conducted on an open well 5.0 m in diameter. The water levels
observed during the test were as follows:
i. Groundwater table level = 250.0 m
ii. Water level when the pumping was stopped = 243.0 m
iii. Water level in the well 2 h after pumping was stopped = 245.0 m
Find the safe yield of the well if the working head is 3.0 m.

13. During a recuperation test, the water in an open well was depressed by pumping by 2.5
meter and it recuperated 1.8 meters in 80 minutes. Find
i. Yield from a well of 4 m diameter under a depression head of 3 meters.
ii. The diameter of a well to yield 8 liters/second under a depression head of 2 meter.
