Tutorial II

The document is a set of tutorial questions from the Civil Engineering Department of Marathwada Institute of Technology related to the design of reinforced concrete beams. It includes 11 questions about analyzing and designing RC beams using limit state and working state methods. The questions cover topics like failure modes of beams, derivation of constants used in design, calculating moment of resistance, and designing beams to carry given loads. Students are divided into batches (B1 to B4) and each batch is assigned 2-3 questions to answer related to course outcome 3, which is to analyze and design RC beams using limit state and working state methods.

Class: T. Y. B. Tech.-II (2021-22, Part-II)
Last Date of submission: 01/05/2022
Tutorial II (Based on Module II-S. R. beam)
Answer the questions as directed
All questions are related to CO 3
Statement of CO3 (Course Outcome 2): Analyze and design the reinforced concrete beam
using the limit state and working state method
Q.1 a. Which are the various modes of failure? All
b. Explain all the above with the help of a stress diagram. (Can draw a single diagram batches
for all)
c. The contractor is undergoing construction of a residential building. As a structural
consultant, while designing the beam sections which mode of failure will be
recommended by you? Justify your answer.

Q. 2 Derive from the basic principles the constants for N. A., lever arm, the moment of All
resistance. Also derive the expression for moment of resistance for singly reinforced batches
balanced section.
Q.3 Determine the moment of resistance and uniformly distributed super-imposed load B1
carried by a simply supported singly reinforced R.C. beam having an effective span of
5m and a cross-section of 300 x 555(b x d ) reinforced with 5x20 mm dia. bars. Use M
20 concrete and Fe 415 steel.
Q.4 Find the moment of resistance of RCC section 350mm x 550 mm overall depth. It is B2
reinforced with two layers of 3 bars of 16mm diameter in each layer. The clear and
distance between the bars in the layer is 16 mm. Use M20 and Fe 415 grades of B3
concrete and steel respectively. (Draw a neat figure in support of the problem
statement)
Q.5 Determine the moment of resistance per meter width of slab having the following B4
details;
Overall thickness – 100mm, reinforcement provided is 12 mm dia. 100mm c/c,
effective cover as 20mm, Consider the grade of concrete and steel as M15 and Fe 250
Q.6 A rectangular singly reinforced beam 300mm wide and 500mm effective depth is used B1
as a simply supported beam over a span of 6.0m. The reinforcement consists of 4 bars and
of 20mm dia. If the beam carries a load of 12 kN/m excluding the self-weight, B4
determine the stresses developed in concrete and steel. Assume appropriate data if
required.
Q.7 A rectangular singly reinforced beam 300mm wide and 500mm effective depth is used B2
as a simply supported beam over a span of 6.0m. The reinforcement consists of 4 bars and
of 20mm dia. If the beam carries a load of 12 kN/m excluding the self-weight, B3
determine the stresses developed in concrete and steel. Assume appropriate data if
required.
Q.8 Determine the position of N.A., lever arm, moment of resistance, percentage of steel All
for a rectangular beam of width “b” and effective depth “d” for M20 and Fe415 batches
Q.9 Design central section of a simply supported beam of 8.0m effective span to carry a B3
load of 10kN/m. The limiting stresses in the concrete and steel are 7 N/mm2 and 230
N/mm2. Consider the width to effective depth ratio as 1:3
Q.10 Design R.C.C beam subjected to a bending moment of 20.0 kNm. Use M 20, Fe 415 B1
grades of concrete and steel respectively. Keep the width of the beam as half of the and
effective depth. B4
Q.11 Design for flexure only R.C. simply supported beam for the following data, B2
Clear span: 5.60 m, superimposed dead load including self-weight:
10 kN/m, live load: 15 kN/m, width of support: 350 mm, grade of concrete is M 25
and steel is Fe415
