Anger
Anger is a common emotion that everyone experiences in daily life. “At the
moment you become angry, you tend to believe that your misery has been
created by another person. You blame him or her for all your suffering. But by
looking deeply, you may realize that the seed of anger in you is the main cause
of your suffering.”
Anger can also be a ‘secondary emotion’ to feeling sad, frightened,
threatened, or lonely.
It is useful to try to understand why you (or somebody else) are feeling angry
at any given time so that the root causes can be addressed and problems
solved.
In the lesson “Rattrap” the peddler believed that the world is a rattrap
designed to tempt people into it. As the world had never been kind to him, it
gave him some kind of an unwonted joy to think ill of it. Hence, he was
amused by this idea as he thought about the people who were already caught
in the trap and others who were circling the bait. So it shows his anger toward
the world.
Desire
More often than not people tend to confuse Purpose with Desire and then
reduce their all-important life Purpose to a collection of self-serving Desires.
The purpose is what brings identity and meaning to your life, whereas,
Desires are generally the expression of ego or self-involvement. A majority of
sufferings are caused to an individual in pursuit of mindless Desires.
In the lesson “Lost Spring” the writer was happy to sense that Mukesh had
the spark in him. He repeated that he would be a motor mechanic. He wanted
to go to a garage and learn the job. The writer asked that as the garage was
at a distance from his home, Mukesh insisted that he would walk up to it. She
asked him if he dreamt of flying planes. The boy became silent and refused.
He did not know about them as he did not know about planes. Not many
planes flew over Firozabad. As he had only seen cars moving around in
Firozabad, his dreams were restricted to them.
Fear
Fear is a survival instinct that we develop to help us avoid danger. This kind
of fear can be named more like “caution”, which is necessary for a healthy
dose.
Irrational fears, on the other hand, are those fears that stop us from doing
things that carry little to no actual risk.
In the lesson “Deep Water” an individual’s personality is based on his
childhood exposure and experiences, complexes and fears ingrained in the
mind as a child continue to stay with him even when he grows up. Therefore,
by working relentlessly on a childhood experience of terror and conquering it,
Douglas is giving us a glimpse of the inner strength of his mind. The
childhood misadventure kept alive the icy horror that grabbed his heart for
years to come.
Pride
Pride brings fulfillment to people's lives on the surface, but below the surface
it only brings destruction.
One of the seven deadly sins is the act of having too much pride. Pride in
general is not an evil feeling to have. It is human to have pride in oneself, but
having too much pride is unhealthy and will cause problems somewhere
along the way.
The lesson “The Tiger King” is a satire on the pride and stubbornness of
those in power.
Embarrassment
Embarrassments usually result from accidental behaviors that lead you to
feel negative about yourself--even when you had no intention of violating a
social standard.
In the lesson “Lost Spring” The author asks Saheb half-joking, whether he will
come to her school if she starts one. Saheb agrees to do so. A few days later
he asks if the school is ready. The writer feels embarrassed at having made a
promise that was not meant. Promises like hers abound in every comer of
their bleak world.
Hobbies and Interest
Hobbies were generally defined as the things that we love to do while free, to
make entertain ourselves.
Interests are generally referred to as the things that we do to skill up
ourselves. Learning about art and molding ourselves into a great artists.
Learning about many stories and becoming a story writer.
In the lesson “The Interview” Umberto classifies himself as an academic
scholar. He attends various academic conferences throughout the week and
writes novels on Sundays. Moreover, we also learn how he believes that our
lives have empty spaces like the ones in atoms. He refers to them as interest
and admits that he does most of his productive work in the course of that
time.
Courage
“Courage”- the smaller the word, the more powerful it is. Human life is full of
challenges and difficulties. Courage works as a weapon that helps us fight
these challenges and difficulties. From smaller to greater decisions, each one
requires courage.
In the lesson “Journey to the end of the Earth” walking on the sheet of ice
was a very different experience for the narrator as being a South Indian sun-
worshipping man, it was hard for him or anyone else to imagine living in a
place where 90 percent of the Earth’s total ice volumes are stored. Not only
biologically or physically difficult, but also for imagination. A place untouched
by humans and their inventions, it gives an experience that makes you forget
about all the other things.
Pain
In the poem “ My Mother at Sixty-six” when the poet was at the airport to take
a flight. This was indicating the departure which looks like separation from her
mother which is creating sadness in her. As and when she was saying
goodbye to her mother, the image of her as old, and worn out struck her
again. Hair she was comparing her mother with a late winter's moon whose
light was being obstacle by fog. Her mother looks old now, her personality
was being affected by the same. The poet is in the pain of separating and
leaving her mother and going. She also had a fear of losing her mother in
childhood but she knows that it was temporary at that time. But that fear is
not coming again and it could be forever as a mother can die of old age and
this fear is haunting her again and again. She was in so much pain that it
would be natural for her to cry out but she was behaving bravely, hiding her
tears and smiling out of it.
Happiness
In the poem “A Thing of Beauty” the poet says that a beautiful thing can give
us extreme happiness and delight. Moreover, a beautiful thing is eternal that
never declines or fades. Also, a beautiful thing resembles a shady shelter that
gives us a comfortable sleep comprising sweet dreams and relaxation.
