EMJ 36404: Project (Written)

Submission date: 13 Jan. 2023 Time: 11.59 PM (Submission via Google
Classroom)

You are an Electrical Engineer at one of the Energy Consulting Firm. The electrical
energy unit manager gives you a task to conduct an energy audit at the Water
Treatment Plant.

The water treatment process starts from the water intake house, which pumps the
raw water from the river. The sludge plant is for the purpose of removing
contaminants from the wastewater. Then, the water is transported to the aerator plant
for the water filtering process. At the chemical plant, several types of chemicals are
used to expedite disinfection. The clean treated water is transported to the treated
water storage in the treated water plant. The water pump is used to transport the
treated water to the district water storage.

Based on your visit to the Water Treatment Plant, there are two major plants
contributed to the large amount of energy consumption. The most energy usage
comes from Raw Water Pumping House and Treated Water Pumping House. The
pumps used in each house have specifications as shown in Table 1 & 2 in Appendix
A.

Fig. 1 shows a daily water level of the water storage supplied by the Treated Water
House. By assuming that the water demand is same every day, propose an energy
saving solutions to that Water Company. The considerations for the energy saving
are as follow: (a) Energy usage based on input / output of the motor pump (b) Cost
estimation based on the energy usage daily & monthly (c) Energy saving solution.

Appendix B

Table 3: Industrial Tariff Applied in Water Treatment Plant in Malaysia

TARIFF E2 – MEDIUM VOLTAGE PEAK / OFF – PEAK INSUSTRIAL TARIFF

For each kWh of maximum demand per month during the peak period 37.00 sen/kWh
For all kWh during the peak period 35.50 sen/kWh
For all kWh during the off period 21.90 sen/kWh
The minimum monthly charge is RM 600.00
The peak hour is from 8 am to 10 pm with the charge of 35.50 sen/kWh. The off peak hour is
from 10 pm to 8 am with the charge of 21.90 sen/kWh.

Estimated Cost peak hour = kWh x 35.50 sen

Estimated Cost off hour = kWh x 21.90 sen

Appendix C

Power efficiency is defined as the ratio of the output power divided by the input power,
which is described by the following equation:

η = 100% x (Pout / Pin) (1)

Whereby,

η is the efficiency at full load (EFF) in percent (%).

Pin is the input power consumption in watts (W).
Pout is the output power or actual work in watts (W).

Rearrange (1),

Pin = Pout x (100% / η) (2)

To calculate the total input power used by the motor pumps in a day, the input power
need to be multiply with the number of pump and number of hour of motor’s operation
which is shown in (3).

Number of Kilowatts of electricity used by pumps if running at full capacity in a day

= Input Power x Number of Pumps x 24 hours (3)
