TYPES OF APHASIA TO KNOW

BROCA'S APHASIA
Broca's aphasia is typically caused by a middle cerebral artery
stroke (MCA), where the lesion is found in the premotor area of
the left frontal lobe.

Broca's aphasia is characterized as a slowed and hesitant speech

pattern, where the patient's vocabulary is limited. The patient presents
with difficulty properly arranging words into well-formed sentences.

Broca's Aphasia can also be called Expressive aphasia

or Non-fluent aphasia on the NPTE. The saying,
"B.E.N has Broca's" is an easy way to remember these
interchangeable names.
Broca's Expressive Non-Fluent

WERNICKE'S APHASIA
Wernicke's aphasia is typically caused by a middle cerebral
artery stroke (MCA), where the lesion is found in the
auditory association cortex in the left lateral temporal lobe.

Wernick'es aphasia is characterized as a speech that flows smoothly

with a perserved melody, however the speech is often incoherent.

The patient's auditory comprehension is impaired thus the patient

demonstrates difficulty with comprehending spoken language and
following commands. In many cases, the patient is also unable to
comprehend written words.

Wernicke's aphasia is also known as receptive aphasia,

sensory aphasia, or fluent aphasia on the NPTE.

GLOBAL APHASIA

Global aphasia is typically caused by a middle cerebral

artery stroke (MCA), where the lesion is found in the third
frontal convolution and the posterior aspect of the
superior temporal gyrus.

Global aphasia is a combination of both Broca's and

Wernicke's aphasia and is characterized as a non-fluent
speech with poor comprehension. This the most severe form
of aphasia which often indicates severe brain damage.

Patient's with global aphasia have a significantly poorer

prognosis compared to the other forms of aphasia.

COMMON TREATMENTS
Promoting Aphasics' Communication Effectiveness (PACE)

If your patient likes the game "Charades", they will find this therapy fun!

The primary goal of this treatment is to improve the patient's conversational skills.

During treatment the patient and the clinician take turns being the message sender
or receiver. The message sender gets a picture prompt and must use
different communication modalities to convey the message.

Visual Action Therapy (VAT)

Most often used with patients who have global aphasia. VAT is a non-verbal
treatment composed of 12 progressively difficult levels.

The patient will begin tracing common objects, followed by matching objects to the
tracing. The patient will later progress to pantomiming tasks, where gestures are
used to identify visible objects and then to symbolize absent objects.
