Good morning Bishop Families-

It was very nice to see many of you in the building over the past two days for
parent-teacher conferences. Bishop Staff is always so appreciative for the lunch the
PTO provides on those days (pictures below in the PTO news).

In the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., “ The function of education is to teach one to
think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of
true education.” I hope you all have a nice, long weekend.

Best-
Eva

BUILDING SKILLS FOR DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS WITH

CHILDREN OF COLOR (60 MINUTES)
The Thompson and Peirce Diversity and Inclusion groups are honored to host Dr. Liza
Talusan for a workshop especially for parents/guardians of BIPOC children in Arlington.

BUILDING SKILLS FOR DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS WITH CHILDREN OF COLOR (60

MINUTES)

02/02/23 - 7:00p EST - 8:00p EST (virtual)

"Are they too young?" "Can I really do this?" "Won't talking about race make them scared?" "I'm
afraid I'm going to mess it up!" As parents and caring adults, we are often faced with
challenging questions about how to best engage with difficult topics with children.
Sometimes we feel nervous, scared, uncertain, or just worried that we'll do it wrong. Join Dr.
Liza Talusan, a nationally recognized facilitator and educator, as we navigate our challenges
in talking about issues of race and racial identity with our children of color. Learn a few
strategies you can use at home to build a healthy relationship rooted in curiosity,
compassion, and community.

Understanding Our Differences

ISO Autism Guest Speakers for the Understanding Our Differences Program in the
Arlington Public Schools
This March, all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students in the Arlington Public Schools will
participate in the Understanding Our Differences disability awareness program, which is
being generously funded by an Arlington Education Foundation grant. This program
includes an hour long webinar, where students learn about a specific disability from an
APS special education teacher, hear the life story of a local guest speaker with that
disability, and have an opportunity to ask questions to the guest speaker. The goal of the
program is to educate students and their teachers to value and accept people of all
abilities. In addition, the program provides APS students with disabilities an opportunity
to engage in learning that reflects their identities and experiences.
We are still looking for local Autism speakers for the three 5th grade webinars, which
will take place during the first three weeks of March 2023. Guest speakers may be
Arlington middle or high school students, family members, or community members.
They will be provided with training from Understanding Our Differences staff prior to the
sessions. They will also receive $75 for each session. If you are interested in participating
as a guest speaker, please reach out to Rebecca Bell at rbell@arlington.k12.ma.us or
617–285–7262. Thank you so much for your interest!

Eleventh Annual Cool Science Artwork Competition - Deadline January 13, 2023.
Cool Science
Cool Science is a free and public art competition held each fall for all K-12 artists.
Cool Science is a collaboration between the UMass Lowell, UMass Boston,
Massachusetts College of Art and Design, University of Kansas, and Kansas City Art
Institute. In 2019, Cool Science received a National Science Foundation grant that
helped it expand the project beyond Massachusetts to Kansas, Missouri, and
Southern New Hampshire.

Challenge Questions
This year, we are asking young artists to answer one of the following challenge
questions with a visual work of art:

1. How might your experience with extreme temperatures be different from

kids in other places around the world?
2. Draw someone who is getting ready for flooding where you live.
3. Draw a public transportation system (like buses & trains) that keeps working
in a severe storm.

Competition Winners
During this winter, we will select the best entries for display on public buses in 2023.
The honorees will be recognized at our art exhibit celebrations next year.

Belmont World Film’s Family Festival is a must-attend event for families, offering
some of the world’s most significant films, as well as enriching workshops, for
children ages 3-12. The majority of films are based on children’s books, such as Julia
Donaldson’s The Smeds and the Smoos (with the voices of double Oscar nominee
Sally Hawkins and Adjoa Andoh of Bridgerton), Little Nicholas: Happy as Can Be
(Luxembourg/France), Oink (The Netherlands), The School of Magical Animals 2
(Germany), The Path (Germany), The Websters (Czech Republic), Icarus and the
Minotaur (France), How I Learned to Fly (Serbia) and My Robot Brother (Denmark), plus
a selection of short film programs from Scholastic/Weston Woods based on picture
books, including their newest never-before seen films, films about Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. and his contemporaries, and films based on Mo Willems books (including
the US premiere of The Pigeon Will Ride the Rollercoaster). This year’s festival
features stories about everything from a sassy young boy becoming captivated by
movies in a village in India (LAST FILM SHOW, on the short list for the Best
International Feature Film Oscar) to a not-so-sassy girl who wants to save her
parents ice cream parlor by hatching a crazy plan (Lucy Wanted). All films with
subtitles will be read aloud through headphones!

Workshops include a Junior Film Critics Workshop on Saturday, January 14 led by

legendary arts and entertainment critic Joyce Kulhawik and Cambridge Day food
and film critic Tom Meek (and a past president of the Boston Society of Film Critics)
and three choices of workshops where kids can learn to model either Gromit or
Shaun the Sheep on Sunday, January 22, with Aardman Animation’s (Wallace &
Gromit films) senior model maker.
