Parallax is the apparent shift in position of an object when viewed from different positions. It can be used to measure the distance to stars and other celestial objects. Friedrich Bessel was the first to use parallax to obtain a reliable distance measurement to a star, 61 Cygni, in 1838. Parallax works by measuring the shift of nearby objects against more distant background objects and requires using the largest possible baseline between observation points. It is one of the most important astronomical techniques for measuring distances, especially to nearby stars.

METHOD WHAT IS PARALLAX? Parallax is the apparent change in position of an object when it is observed from a different place.
Parallax Method: When an object is seen by closing
our right and left eye alternatively, there is a shift in the position of the object w.r.t. the background observed. This is known as parallax. In order to measure the parallax of stars which are very far away, we must use the largest baseline possible.(The baseline is the distance between the two points where we take the measurements. For the experiment above your thumb, the baseline is the distance between your eyes.) WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF PARALLAX METHOD?
Parallax is one of the most important
distance measurement methods used by astronomers. It can only be used for nearby stars, but it is very accurate. The method works by measuring how nearby object appears to move against the background of more distant objects. WHO DISCOVERED THE PARALLAX? An astronomer and mathematician, Bessel was the first to publish a reliable measurement of parallax, in 1838. He detected an annual shift in the position of the star 61 Cygni amounting to 0.314 arc seconds, placing the star at a distance of FRIEDRICH BESSEL about 10 light-years. STELLAR PARALLAX
A shift in position of a nearby object
against a far-away object. Because 'stellar' means 'star,' the nearby object in this case is a close star. DIURNAL PARALLAX The diurnal parallax has been used by John Flamsteed in 1672 to measure the distance to Mars at its opposition and through that to estimate the astronomical unit and the size of the Solar System. LUNAR PARALLAX Estimating the Moon's distance In the second century BC Hipparchus derived a very good estimate of the distance to the moon using lunar parallax. It is based on how much the moon shifts relative to the background stars when we observe it from different vantage points on earth. SOLAR PARALLAX The basic method used for determining solar parallax is the determination of trigonometric parallax. In accordance with the law of gravitation, the relative distances of the planets from the Sun are known, and the distance of the Sun from Earth can be taken as the unit of length. MOVING CLUSTER METHOD The moving-cluster method can be used to find the appoximate distance to relatively nearby star clusters. Use the moving-cluster method with the data given below to estimate the distance to the Hyades open cluster. DYNAMICAL PARALLAX Is a method for determining the distance to a visual binary star. The angular diameter of the orbit of the stars around each other and their apparent brightness to nearby stars. THANK YOU! Presented by: Princess Daine S. Marquez 12-Marx
