    A watershed is an area of land where all water within it drains to a common outlet such as a river, lake, or ocean. Water flows from higher to lower elevations within a watershed, eventually exiting the system at a single point. Watersheds can be examined on both large and small scales, and impervious surfaces can disrupt the natural water balance by increasing surface runoff and reducing groundwater recharge.
