CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study

Teenage pregnancy has been a worldwide issue that needs to be confronted to

mitigate the problem the problems of maternal adolescent childbearing, especially in

the third world

countries. This often results to single parenthood which catalyzes conditions that

renders the mother to become irresponsible. Teenage Pregnancies are often associated

with social development issues such as lack of sufficient education and poverty.

It has become a national epidemic, partly because more and more teenagers who

give birth decide to keep and raise their children. There is a great cost to individuals,

families and society when children have children of their own. Adolescents lack

knowledge of access to conventional methods of preventing pregnancy, as they may be

afraid to seek such information or be ignorant on the effects and consequences of

falling pregnant; keeping the baby; terminating their pregnancy; contraction of viruses

and even diseases.

The major goal of this study is to give awareness to the students. Teenage

pregnancy has two aspects, and both could occur concurrently within the same

country, whether developed or developing. On the one hand, high teenage pregnancy

rates may result from the culturally sanctioned practice of early marriage and early

marital childbearing, and on the other, from premarital intercourse and unintended

pregnancy. Research evidence points to a shift in behaviors among young people in

patterns of sexual activity such that early childbearing is becoming more a

consequence of early intercourse. This is more often true in urban than in rural areas.

Pregnancy at an early age is risky for the mother and the baby. Maternal

conditions in adolescents cause 13% of all deaths and 23% of all Disability Adjusted

Life Years (DALYs) (overall burden of disease due to pregnancy and childbirth

among women of all ages).

The Philippines teenage pregnancy rate has increased by 60% in the year 2000-

2010, according to the Philippine National Statistics Office. This is very alarming.

Teenage pregnancy often occurs between the ages of 15-19 years old, often in this age

the girls are still studying. A high teenage pregnancy rate contributes to high

population growth as teenage mothers will have considerably longer

exposure to the risk of pregnancy than those who enter into marital unions at

a later age.

Teenage pregnancy affects about 6% of Filipino girls. That sounds like a small

number but is the second highest rate in Southeast Asia based on Save the Children’s

Global Childhood Report from 2019. An estimated 538 babies are born to Filipino

teenage mothers EVERY SINGLE DAY, according to the Philippine Statistical

Authority from 2017.

The adolescent pregnancy epidemic in the Philippines has been acknowledged as

one of the worst in the Western Pacific Region with a recent prevalence of 13.6%

among 15–19 year olds. The total number of this phenomenon is increasing each year.

Philippines is one of the Asian countries which shares similar situation. In a study

conducted by the National Demographic and Health Survey in 2013, one out of every

young Filipino women age 15 to 19 is already a mother or pregnant with a first child.
Significance of the Study

The results of the study will then be beneficial to the following persons and

institutions:

Students: They will gain deeper understanding about teenage pregnancy and most

importantly for them to learn about the experiences of being a teenage mom.

Parents: This helps to guide and give awareness to their children about teenage
pregnancy.

Teachers: This helps them to guide their students about teenage pregnancy.

School: This will provide them an information to promote, enhance understanding and

support to programs concerning to learners such as counseling and seminars.

Researchers: They will broaden their knowledge about the experiences of being a

teenage mother.
Statement of the Problem

Theoretical Background

Just like teaching methodology, reading theories have had their shifts and

transitions.

Starting from the resilience view which focused on the printed form of a text and

moving

to the cognitive view that enhanced the role of background knowledge in addition to

what

appeared on the printed page.

According to Michael Rutter (2006), in the resilience view of reading, an

interactive concept that is concerned with the combination of serious risk experiences

and a relatively positive psychological outcome despite those experiences he makes

the point that resilience is more than social competence or positive mental health;

competence must exist with risk to be resilience.
