Do not just give answers, but give calculations and explain your steps.

1. Find
∂ ∂2
f (2x − 3y, 4xy) and f (2x − 3y, 4xy)
∂y ∂x∂y
in terms of the partial derivatives of the function f , assuming that f has continuous
partial derivatives of all orders.

2. The function f : R2 → R is given by

f (x, y) = xy 2 − x2 y − y 3 + 4y.

a) Determine all critical points of f .

b) Indicate for each of the critical points found in 2a) if f has a minimum or
maximum value, or that it is a saddle point.
c) Determine if the extreme value(s) found in 2b) are local or absolute. Explain
your answer!

3. Use the method of Lagrange multipliers to find the maximum and minimum value
of the function f (x, y) = xy subject to the constraint 4x2 + y 2 = 8.

4. a) Calculate the iterated integral

b) The domain S ⊂ R2 is given by

n o
S = (x, y) ∈ R2 1 ≤ x2 + y 2 ≤ 2 and − x ≤ y ≤ x .

Calculate Z Z p

b) Solve in C: z 2 = 3 − i.
Express your solutions in the form r(cos (θ) + i sin (θ)).

6. Transform the polar equation

r = 2 sin θ + 4 cos θ

to rectangular coordinates, and describe the curve represented.

7. Let y = y(x). Find the general solution of

dy √
(1 + x2 ) = x y.
