Lesson Plan - Relations and Functions

This lesson plan aims to teach students about relations and functions through various representations. It begins with a drill on multiplication and an activity to identify relations between two sets. Students will then analyze Liza's earnings from working different hours, representing it through a table, mapping diagram, graph, and equation. They will determine whether relations shown are functions or not. To assess understanding, students will analyze the rental charges of bicycles at different time periods and represent the data in ordered pairs. The lesson defines relations and functions, and notes that every function is a relation but some relations are not functions.

Grade: Grade 8
LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 8
Module: RELATIONS AND FUNCTIONS
LEARNING COMPETENCY 4: Illustrates a relation and a function. (M8AL-IIc-2)

I. OBJECTIVES
In this lesson, the students are expected to:
a. Define relation and function.
b. Illustrate/represent a relation and function through set of ordered pairs, table,
mapping diagram, graph and equation or rule

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Relations and Functions
Sub-topic: Representations of Relations and Functions
Materials: Cartolina, marker, pocket chart, laptop, LCD projector
References: LM pages 138 – 144 (DLHTM, VIII.A. FOODS AND LOCAL PRODUCTS, X.A.
TOURIST SPOTS)

II. PROCEDURE:
A. Preliminaries
- Drill
Direction: Find the product of the following.
1. 8 x 0 =
2. -5 x 10 =
3. 7 x 8 =
4. 5 x (-7) =
5. -6 x (-6) =
- Motivational or Purpose Setting Activity

Where do I belong?????
Direction: Identify the given corresponding relation from set A to set B.

SET A SET B

SCHOOL MA. POPS P. JARALBIO

CITY CATBALOGAN NATIONAL COMPREHENSIVE HIGH SCHOOL
PRINCIPAL ERNIE’S PIZZA
FOOD THE SECRET CAFE
RESTAURANT TAMALOS

 Is there a relation between the Set A and B?

 Form some ordered pair using the format: (Set A, Set B)

B. Lesson Proper
1. Teaching/Exploratory Activity
Situation: Suppose Liza B. Langhoy is working in Centro Department Store as saleslady at Catbalogan
City and he earned ₱43 per hour.
Questions:
a. How much will Liza earn if he work for
4 hours a day?
5 hours a day?
6 hours a day?
7 hours a day?
8 hours a day?
b. Is his earnings related to the number of hours of work? How?

Liza’s earnings can be represented by table, mapping diagram, graph and equation or rule

Number of 4 5 6 7 8
Hours (x)
₱172 ₱215 ₱258 ₱301 ₱344
Earnings (y)
By table

By Mapping Diagram

Number of Hours (x) Earnings (y)

4 ₱172

5 ₱215

6 ₱258

7 ₱301

8 ₱344

By Graph
344

By equation or by rule, Liza’s earnings can be represented by

Let x = number of hours
y = Earnings
y = 43(x)
The relations you have formed in the previous activities are all examples of a FUNCTION, as they are
one-to-one correspondence. If the relation shows many-to-one correspondence it is also a function,
but if the relation is one-to-many correspondence, then it is not a function.

C. Analysis:

1. What can you say about relation? Function?

2. Can you determine whether a relation is a function or a mere relation? How?
3. What will be your reference that a relation is a function?
4. Give real-life examples/ situations that can describe a function.

D. Abstraction:

A relation is any set of ordered pairs. The set of all the first coordinates is called the domain of the
relation. The set of all the second coordinates is called the range.

{ (−2,8 ) , (−1,7 ) , (−1,6 ) ,(7,6)}

A function is a relation in which any set of ordered pairs in which NO x-value is repeated.

{ (−2,8 ) , (−1,7 ) , ( 0 ,−1 ) ,(7,6)}

NOTE: Every function is a relation, but some relations are not functions.

A function can be represented by using a table, or a set of ordered pairs of numbers, by mapping, by
picture or graph, by equation and by rule or correspondence expressed in words. When pictures and
arrows are used in representing a function, the function may be called mapping.

E. Assessment:
Suppose the bicycle rental at the Imelda Park is worth Php 20 per hour. Your sister would like to rent
a bicycle for amusement.

1. How much will your sister pay, if she would like to rent a bicycle for 1 hour? 2 hours? 3 hours?
2. Based on your answers in item 1, write ordered pairs in the form (time, charge).
3. Based on your answers in item 2, what is the domain? What is the range?
4. How are rental time and cost of rental related to each other.
F. ASSIGNMENT

Direction: Answer the following using the Table below.

The weight of a person on earth and on the moon is given in the table as approximates.
Weight on
120 126 132 138 144 150
earth (N)
Weight on
the moon 20 21 22 23 24 25
(N)
