INTRODUCTION TO MECHANICAL
ENGINEERING

Chapter 2
INTRODUCTION TO MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

 Mechanical Engineering domain

 Mechanical Engineering profession
 Disciplines in the Mechanical Engineering

1
Learning Objectives

Student should be able to :-

1. Understand the role of mechanical engineering.

2. List the mechanical engineering domain and

specialization.

3. List 10 sample of job title for Mechanical Engineer

MECHANICAL ENGINEERS
What Do They Do?

2
“Concerns with the design, development and
manufacture of machines and mechanical engineering
systems”

 Design, develop and produce many of tools used by other engineer

(innovations)

 Study the behavior of the materials when forces are applied to them or
when they are heated or cooled. Using this knowledge, they design machines
such as automobiles, air conditioners and submarines.

 Involve with all forms of energy utilization and conversion,

manufacturing (production) material and processes and engines.

 Use mathematics and physical sciences to analyze problem

 Expected to constantly improve, re-design and invent equipment

 May work in maintenance, technical sales, or as administrators or

managers.

Mechanical Eng. Domain

1. Development (Analysis, Research)
2. Design
3. Manufacture
4. Maintenance of mechanical system
5. Consultation

3
Mechanical Eng. Domain (cont.)
Modern analysis and design processes in mechanical
engineering are aided by various computational tools
including FEA, CFD, and CAD/CAM. Manufacturing is
typically accomplished with the aid of CNC machines
including robots, milling machines, and lathes.

Mechanical Eng. Domain

Manufacturing is the transformation of raw materials
into finished goods for sale by means of tools and a
processing medium, and including all intermediate
processes involving the production or finishing of
component parts ("semi-manufactures").

4
Mechanical Engineering as a
Profession

“Will lead you into one of a broadest

area engineering. There are job for
Mechanical Engineer in nearly every area of
industry”.

Mechanical Eng. Profession

 Mechanical engineering touches almost every aspect of our life.
 Mechanical engineers find employment in virtually every
industry, such as the automotive and aerospace industries,
manufacturing, consulting firms, and with government offices
and agencies.
 Career opportunities are abundant, varied, and rewarding

5
Disciplines in Mechanical Eng.
• The engineer might start from a blank sheet of paper, conceive
something new, develop and refine it so that it works reliably,
and all the while satisfy constraints of manufacturability,
safety, and cost.

• An engineer creates a machine, product, or system that helps

someone to solve a technical problem

• Mechanical engineers develop hardware that exploits those

elements in order to serve a useful purpose.

Major areas of Specialization

• Combustion and Fuel • Noise and vibration

• Heat transfer control
• Energy systems • Automatic control
• Fluid Flow (mechanics) • Computer Aided
• Innovation and design Engineering
• Material Selection • Management of project
• Control systems • Biomedical engineering
• Turbo machinery • Aeronautics
• Robotics
