SENIOR ONE FINAL EXAM Paper 2

Time allowed: 1h.15’ (+ List: 1h. 30’)

SECTION A: Reading Comprehension

Read the text and circle the correct option, true (T) or false (F).
Steve Biko
For over 100 years, the country of South Africa had a system called 'apartheid'. Apartheid
separated black and white people: black people in South Africa could not vote or go to the same
places as white people. They could not live in the same places, and they could not get many of the
jobs that white people had. Black South Africans, and many white South Africans too, hated this
system, and they tried for many years to change it. One of these people was Steve Biko.
Steve Biko was born in 1946 in King Williams Town in South Africa, and he studied Medicine at
university. In the 1960s he was one of the leaders of a student group that worked to finish apartheid in
South Africa. In 1969, he was the first president of the South African Students' Organisation. He
worked hard to help black people in his country, and in 1972 he became president of the Black
People's Convention.
The white South African government didn't like Biko, and he went to prison many times. In
1977, the police took him to prison again, and this time he didn't come out. The police beat him, and
he died in a prison hospital. He was 31 years old.
Fourteen years later, in 1991, apartheid ended and in 1994, Nelson Mandela became the first black
president of South Africa.
