SHOPPING
Feeling lonely? Why don’t you go to a shopping mall? You can buy a new pair of shoes, a nice
jacket or just a new computer game. Shopping is quick and easy because shopping malls are
everywhere, and they are open 24 hours. You just get in your car and drive to a shopping mall.
Many people go shopping to buy necessary things, but some people go shopping for different
reasons. Actually, shopping is a favorite hobby for many people today and they go shopping to
change their mood. They buy new things and feel very good.
Shopping is sometimes similar to an addiction; that is, it becomes a very dangerous habit like
smoking or taking drugs. People get into this dangerous habit and spend a lot of money. Then they
become very sad because they can’t pay their credit card bills.
How do you understand an addicted shopper? The answer isn’t easy, but addicted shoppers’
characteristics are usually common. They generally buy a lot of clothes, but they never wear them.
They often hide their shopping from their families and they don’t show their new things to them.
They usually buy things because they want to forget about their stress or personal problems, but
then they have a serious shopping problem.
In short, shopping is necessary and it is a part of our lives, but be careful and don’t spend
much money on unnecessary things.

1. What is the text mainly about?
a) the good characteristics of shoppers
b) the habit of shopping

Earthwatch
Five years ago Will Slade read about an organization called
Earthwatch. Earthwatch finds volunteers for expeditions to study and
research in different parts of the world. Will decided to join an
expedition to study elephants in Africa. “I wasn’t sure about it before I
went,” says Will. “But in fact, I really enjoyed every minute of the
expedition. Unfortunately, I also had hard days during those days. We
slept in uncomfortable places or tents and we cooked our own food, but
still it was great to see the elephants and all the other animals there.”
He counted birds in the rain forests of South America. He planted
trees in Europe and he studied whales in the Pacific Ocean in 2006. “On
my last expedition I was in Hawaii. We were on a small island. We got up
at 6 a.m. every morning and had our breakfast. Then we went out in the
boats and we looked for whales. We spent most of the day in the boat.
We photographed the whales, counted them, and recorded their songs.
Whales sing to each other, you know. In the evenings, we put all the data into the computer. It was
hard work, but we had a lot of fun, and I learnt a lot, too.”
Earthwatch finds volunteers for hundreds of expeditions every
year. They are all ordinary people – male and female, young and old,
teachers, students, office workers, engineers. Last year, some of them
dug up dinosaur bones in North America and they studied ancient
civilizations in Central America and Australia. They explored the
forests and rivers of South-east Asia. So, they learned many things
about nature.
Will says “I enjoy all the expeditions because I see some fantastic places. This world is a very
beautiful place, but it’s disappearing fast. We can learn more about it and we can do something to
save it.
2. What kind of problems did Will have during his journey in Africa?

Celebrating the New Year with Food
The New Year is a very special occasion. We say goodbye to the last year, and we think about
the future. We celebrate with family members, friends, and neighbors. Cultures around the world
celebrate the New Year, but they celebrate it a little differently. For everyone, New Year’s means
special food.
In many parts of the world, rice is the most important ingredient in New Year’s foods. People
prepare rice in many different ways, from rice cakes to rice soup. In Korea, parents encourage
children to eat all of their rice cake soup for a good year. In Vietnam, people carefully wrap a rice
cake in a large, fresh green leaf. This makes a perfect square cake. In China, the New Year Cake is a
special sweet cake with rice. Every area of China has a different kind of New Year Cake.
In other parts of the world, beans are the common ingredient in many New Year’s dishes.
Everyone prepares beans in a different way. Italians enjoy eating green lentils, a kind of bean. In
Brazil, families like to cook special lentils and rice. Sweet black beans are popular in Japan on New
Year’s. In the southern United States, families like eating a special kind of bean dish called “black-
eyed peas.”
Some cultures have some unusual traditions for the New Year. In Mexico and other Spanish-
speaking countries, at midnight, each person eats 12 grapes in one minute. Each grape is for a
month. If a grape is sour, maybe that will be a bad month in the New Year. For the Persian New Year,
the traditional table has seven “S’s.” There are seven foods. Each food begins with the Persian Letter
S.
In the United States and Canada, many people like to go to parties on New Year’s Eve. On
New Year’s Day, families enjoy eating special foods from around the world. Because people in the
U.S. and Canada are from so many different cultures, there isn’t one traditional food that everyone
eats. Every family has special foods for the holiday.

small reading area. It’s next to a big window. You can view the sunny street.

think about information. However, many people also think about shopping.
Amazon.com was one of the first online companies. It started to sell
products on the Internet in the 1980s. Jeff Bezos started the company. One day,
he made a prediction about the future. He saw the fast growth of the World
Wide Web and he quit his job. He drove across the country to Seattle and started
an online store there. Its name was Amazon.com. Bezos had very little money at
