Text 1: Read the text below and answer the following questions.
Day Care for Dogs
Dogs are often called man’s best friends. Pet owners consider their animals as a member of
their families and especially dogs are enjoying the benefits of doggie day care centers these days. It is
convenient to leave the pooch at home during the day, but people don’t want to leave their dogs for
ten or twelve hours. For this reason, day care for dogs is now a growing business. Dogs are social
animals, so they can’t stay alone. When they are alone at home, maybe because they miss their
owners, they become nervous and they chew on furniture, shoes, and clothing. At the end of a long
day, pet owners often greet a frustrated animal and find a messy house.
For many dog owners, the answer to this problem is doggie day care. It begins with an
unusual idea, other people copy it, and then someone else thinks of a way to make it popular. In the
United States, forty-three percent of the homes have at least one dog, and pet owners are spending
$32 billion every year on their animals’ care. Some spend $30 a day or more to keep their dogs
healthy and in a good mood.
It may be incredible, but in one-day care center in New York City, dog owners fill out an
application for membership and a family, diet, and medical history for the animal. In one-day care
center in Canada, the dogs go for long walks in the forest and sleep in their personal spots in front of
a warm fire. In another location, the dogs get on boats and take trips on the river! Of course, after a
10
long day of play and exercise, dogs get tired, so they can have a massage from a licensed massage
therapist.
Dog owners love the convenience of day care for their pets. Most doggie day care centers
have flexible hours to meet the needs of pets and their owners. Also, some have car service available
to pick up the pooches in the morning and drop them off in the evening. At many places, pet owners
can even watch their animals during the day on web cameras from their offices or home computers.
For late nights or vacations, doggies can stay overnight in a private room with a special bed.
Who knows? Maybe one day soon we will read about exciting new restaurants just for dogs!

A. Read the statements. If a statement is true, write (T) on the line. If it is false, write (F). Correct
the false ones.
____ 1. It is OK to leave a dog at home alone.
____ 2. Doggie day care is a useless business.
____ 3. Dogs don’t like to be alone.

Feeling lonely? Why don’t you go to a shopping mall? You can buy a new pair of shoes, a nice
jacket or just a new computer game. Shopping is quick and easy because shopping malls are
everywhere, and they are open 24 hours. You just get in your car and drive to a shopping mall.
Many people go shopping to buy necessary things, but some people go shopping for different
reasons. Actually, shopping is a favorite hobby for many people today and they go shopping to
change their mood. They buy new things and feel very good.
Shopping is sometimes similar to an addiction; that is, it becomes a very dangerous habit like
smoking or taking drugs. People get into this dangerous habit and spend a lot of money. Then they
become very sad because they can’t pay their credit card bills.
How do you understand an addicted shopper? The answer isn’t easy, but addicted shoppers’
characteristics are usually common. They generally buy a lot of clothes, but they never wear them.
They often hide their shopping from their families and they don’t show their new things to them.
They usually buy things because they want to forget about their stress or personal problems, but
then they have a serious shopping problem.

Five years ago Will Slade read about an organization called
Earthwatch. Earthwatch finds volunteers for expeditions to study and
research in different parts of the world. Will decided to join an
expedition to study elephants in Africa. “I wasn’t sure about it before I
went,” says Will. “But in fact, I really enjoyed every minute of the

slept in uncomfortable places or tents and we cooked our own food, but

hard work, but we had a lot of fun, and I learnt a lot, too.”

teachers, students, office workers, engineers. Last year, some of them
dug up dinosaur bones in North America and they studied ancient
civilizations in Central America and Australia. They explored the
forests and rivers of South-east Asia. So, they learned many things

prepare rice in many different ways, from rice cakes to rice soup. In Korea, parents encourage
children to eat all of their rice cake soup for a good year. In Vietnam, people carefully wrap a rice
cake in a large, fresh green leaf. This makes a perfect square cake. In China, the New Year Cake is a
special sweet cake with rice. Every area of China has a different kind of New Year Cake.
In other parts of the world, beans are the common ingredient in many New Year’s dishes.
Everyone prepares beans in a different way. Italians enjoy eating green lentils, a kind of bean. In
Brazil, families like to cook special lentils and rice. Sweet black beans are popular in Japan on New
Year’s. In the southern United States, families like eating a special kind of bean dish called “black-
eyed peas.”
Some cultures have some unusual traditions for the New Year. In Mexico and other Spanish-
speaking countries, at midnight, each person eats 12 grapes in one minute. Each grape is for a
month. If a grape is sour, maybe that will be a bad month in the New Year. For the Persian New Year,
the traditional table has seven “S’s.” There are seven foods. Each food begins with the Persian Letter
S.
In the United States and Canada, many people like to go to parties on New Year’s Eve. On
New Year’s Day, families enjoy eating special foods from around the world. Because people in the
U.S. and Canada are from so many different cultures, there isn’t one traditional food that everyone
eats. Every family has special foods for the holiday.

A Tall Man in a Small Space
Steve Sauer is a very tall man. He’s 6 feet 2 inches (187 cm), but he lives in an extremely
small apartment. It’s only 11 feet by 16 feet (3.35 by 4.88 meters). However, this isn’t a problem for
Sauer. He loves his small apartment. Sauer doesn’t like extra, unused space because he doesn’t own
many things.
Sauer spent seven years building his tiny apartment. He designed it, and he also designed
and built some of the furniture. The apartment has many open areas. It doesn’t have many walls or
doors. It has a kitchen with a dining area, a bathroom, two beds, a TV area, and a reading area. In
addition, he has space for his two bicycles.
When you come in the front door, there is a hall. The bathroom is on the left. Next to the
bathroom is the kitchen. In the hall near the kitchen counter, there is a large yellow square on the
floor. Lift it up, and you see a beautiful bathtub under the floor.
The most interesting part of the apartment are the beds and the TV area. There is one bed
above the bathroom. The other bed is above the closet, at the end of the hall. The TV area is beside
the closet. It’s a small but relaxing place to watch TV. Above this area, across from the bed, there is a
small reading area. It’s next to a big window. You can view the sunny street.
Sauer loves his tiny apartment. It is modern and neat. There is a place for everything
