What Is It
What is Bias?
Bias in writing can be defined as:
• A prejudice against something an author is writing about.
• Favoritism for something an author is writing about.
• An author letting feelings or emotions cloud his/her objectivity with regard to
something he/she is writing about.
An important skill of critical reading is the ability to detect an author's bias . The reason
for this is to avoid invalidation of an author's claim.
There are several ways to detect an author's possible bias and prejudice, for example:
1. the author uses inflammatory language: in the most extreme cases, racial epithets,
slurs, etc.;
2. the author consistently makes claims whose larger purpose is to elevate (or demean)
one’s social, ethnic, national, religious, or gender group as compared to another, or
all others;
3. the author consciously presents evidence that serves to tell only one side of an event or
issue, purposefully withholding or ignoring information that may shed the opposing
view in a more positive light;

4
4. the author manufactures, falsifies and/or dishonestly cites evidence in order to present
his or her case in a more positive light.
Bias is a subjective way of thinking that tells only one side of a story sometimes leading
to inaccurate information or a false impression. When you research, it is crucial that you
identify the level of bias in potential sources. Below are some possible sources of bias.
• The writer relies on incomplete information.
• The writer is tries to deceive the reader.
• The writer wants to believe what he or she is saying.
• The writer’s past experience influences his or her thinking.
• The writer is tries to persuade the reader.
The author shows bias when he leaves out information or alters facts to force the reader
to have a certain opinion about a subject, or to convince the reader to take a certain action.
Reading requires that a reader recognize bias in writing. On this recognition, the reader may
become the victim of the writer’s propaganda. To identify bias in a passage or article, the reader
must read through the material and ask, “What does the writer want me to think or to do?” Bias
is often present in editorials, advertisements, religious publications, and political materials.

What Is It

Discussion of Activity 1
When we want others to believe in us, we try to say or do something that will convince
them. The word convince is synonymous with the word persuade. To persuade someone means
to influence a person to a specific action that we want him or her to get involved with. Some
people are using manipulation in order to sway others to take part in what they are promoting,
supporting and endorsing. Manipulation may come in different forms such as controlling some
situations, using flowery and sugar-coated words, and overdoing an action just to convince
others. This is where the idea of propaganda comes into play.
Propaganda is information that is misleading in nature used to promote someone's point
of view or promote a political cause. It is the art of persuasion (English Times). It is very
common in advertisement in different media platforms such in broadcast (TV and radio), print
(newspapers and magazines) and new media (Social media and internet).
Types of Propaganda Techniques
Bandwagon – The idea of this type of propaganda intentionally makes a person feel to be left
out from group.
Examples:
1. Pepsi commercial that pushed forth the slogan “the choice of a new generation.”
2. On the commercial you see that as one person takes out their phone another person does
until everyone in the balcony has a 7 mobile phone out to capture dancing. This
commercial would make viewers think that everyone in the dance is supporting T-
Mobile.
3. Proactive skincare commercial uses assertation: “Philippines’ #1 skin care product” to
group proactive with the entire country.

5
Plain Folks – The user of this product is an ordinary or common people. It relates more on
one’s experiences.
Examples:
1. A baby promoting different foods.
2. Pampanga’s Best...It says “Ang di mapantayan, ang Original Tocino ng bayan.
3. A little boy that could be anyone is advertising OREO.
Card Stacking – The idea behind this technique is that the advertiser intentionally removes
any information that may damage their image and put only the information which will bait a
person into the trap.
Examples:
1. Creamsilk conditioner can give hair a smooth and silky appearance.
2. During election periods political parties will often gag their loose cannons who might
pen their mouths and say the wrong thing.
3. A brand of snack food is loaded with sugar then commercial may boast that product is
known in fat which implies that is also low in calories.
Name-Calling – this type of propaganda makes use of insulting or belittling labels resulting in
the formation of a negative opinion or impression about a product, person, and group.
Example:
1. In TV commercial, the rival product will be branded either x or y despite the advertiser
would cover the brand name. But because of other clues like its color, design and
layout, you can still recognize that product.
Glittering Generalities – this propaganda technique uses positive words to influence a
person’s buying decision.
Examples:
1. Things go better with coke
2. Find magic in Enchanted Kingdom
3. Strike up for the new world
4. Gatorade always wins
Testimonials – Advertisers use the endorsements of influencers, popular personalities,
authority figures or experts in the field to convince that the product is worth the money.
Examples:
1. Katrine Bernardo promoting a beauty cream.
2. Lebron James is promoting the famous fast food place Mc Donald's! When his fans see
this, they want to eat it because their favorite NBA Basketball player eats it.
3. Serena Williams promotes Gatorade she wants her fans to buy it.
Transfer – this is a technique of impressing good or bad qualities of a person, object, product
to another in order to make the second more acceptable or to shame it.
Examples:

6
1. Manny Pacquioa train very hard for his fight but he feels pain every training so he takes
Alaxan FR to relieve the pain.
2. Sarah Geronimo have a long black silky hair in taking good care of her hair she
uses Sunsilk.

What is It
Analyzing literature can be a complex process since it involves critical thinking to be
able to arrive at an interpretation or draw a conclusion based on the details or elements. In
this part, let us first define analysis.
In literature, (it means) “when we analyze something, we break it down into its separate
parts and look at how those parts work together. In the case of a story, we break it into its
literary elements, like character and plot, in order to see how they work together to produce
the story.
In addition, an analysis is trying to come up to a deeper understanding of the meaning
of a literary piece and its place in the world.
What are the ways to analyze a literary piece?

a. examine the elements in relation to a piece of literature; and

b. examine how the ideas and elements relate to a broad social, political and
cultural situation?

How are we going to break down the parts of a literary piece into its separate elements? This
calls for the various elements of a literary piece, these are:

1. Setting is a description of where and when the story takes place. It also means geography,
weather, time of day ad social conditions.
2. Characterization deals with how the characters are described: through dialogue, by the
way they speak, can be the physical appearance, thoughts and feelings.
3. Plot is the main sequence of events that make up the story.
4. Point of view means whose eyes the story is being told through. Is he the narrator or
speaker in the story? Is the narrator the main character? Does the author speak through
one of the characters?

5
5. Conflict or tension is usually the heart of the story and is related to the main character.
6. The theme is the main idea, lesson or message in the story. It is usually an abstract,
universal idea about the human condition, society or life, to name a few.
7. The author’s style has to do with the author’s vocabulary, tone or feeling of the story. It
has to do with his attitude towards the subject. The writer’s use of literary devices--
elements and techniques that create a perception of writing to the reader.

Literary Devices/ Meanings Examples

Symbolism is the use of symbols 7. The color red can symbolize struggle, power,

Analyzing literature helps illustrate for people that successful art may involve
self-expression, but to a greater purpose beyond the creator, whether to inform, to
invoke empathy, to inspire, or simply to entertain.

6
What is a “shared heritage?” It means putting common values, shared history
and experiences in the spotlight that can contribute to and reinforce a sense of
belonging among people regardless of physical, social and cultural boundaries. For
example, cultural heritage does not end at monuments and collections of objects. It also
includes traditions or living expressions inherited from our ancestors and passed on to our
descendants, such as oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals, festive
events, knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe or the knowledge
and skills to produce traditional crafts.
So, when does literature become a mirror to a shared heritage of people with diverse
backgrounds? Literature is a history, or more like a background of a certain culture because it
reflects the ideas, feelings and experiences of the author. As a human with feelings and logical
thinking, we can be able to connect and relate to them and share commonalities and consider
such pieces as heritage despite of differences in culture, traditions, values and experiences.
Literature promotes cultural understanding and appreciation; literature helps
people understand themselves, their families, and their communities better as members of a
particular culture. By reading folk tales and legends, for example, they learn about "the origin
of traditional cultural values and beliefs" (Diamond & Moore 1995: 221).
The understanding and appreciation of culture that results from the study of literature
helps students develop a positive self-image and attitude toward their heritage language and
culture. If heritage literary works are compared to writings from the dominant culture or other
cultures, people gain a deeper understanding and acceptance.

Set in a lotus lake
And under its glass-bead curtains wait
For my closed heart to break.

Makato and the Cowrie Shell

(A Thai Folktale)
Supanese Khanchanathiti

There is an orphan named Makato, a young boy. He did not have any way to support
himself. He worked hard doing any jobs he could to survive. He was a hard worker, which
people noticed. He would dream of being on an adventure to a bigger place where the land
was fertile and the people were kind, which encouraged him to do so.
He set out one day after preparing. The journey led him to a bigger town. He asked a
woman for water and told her that he got on a journey to see the king, who was said to be
kind. Makato worked with the king’s elephants and began working for her. He eventually
encountered the king. During the encounter, he picked up a cowrie shell that was lying on the
road and offered it to the king.
The King said that he could keep it. Makato pondered what he could do to honor the
king’s gift. He saw lettuce seeds at a stall in the market and thought that he could grow them.
He asked the woman about them, and she let him have as many as would stick to his finger
in return for his treasured cowrie shell. Makato grew the lettuces. The king visited him once
more. Makato gave one lettuce to the king and told him that he grew them from the shell.
