PROJECT REPORT ON
ASSESSMENT OF MARKET SAMPLES AS PER BIS

SUBMITTED BY

SDP BATCH - 34th

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I sincerely thank the management of Lohia group and
Faculty and Instructors, Administrative staff of TTRC for
their support and guidance throughout the three month
in plant training. It was a great learning experience and
shall be very helpful for my career in the future.
INTRODUCTION:
Assessment of market samples of Sugar Bags (50 Kg) is been done,
obtained parameters are been compared with BIS standards,
accordingly remarks are given and conclusion is made. Samples were
taken randomly.

REFERENCES:

The references are been taken from IS 14968:2015 for sugar bags
which are discussed below brief. thus only the test results are been
concluded later.

SUGAR BAG IS 14968:2015

The sacks shall be of following two types depending upon the
capacity:
a) Type 1-Sacks having packaging capacity of 50 kg.

b) Type 2Sacks having packaging capacity of 25 kg.

RAW MATERIAL
The high density polyethylene (HDPE) or polypropylene (PP) used for
manufacture of tape shall confirm to the requirements specified in IS
10146 or IS 10910 respectively. The raw material composition mix to
be used for manufacturing of the HDPE/PP woven sacks shall be as
agreed to between the buyer and the seller.

FABRIC
The fabric used in the manufacture of HDPE/PP woven sacks shall be
woven as a tube on circular looms from HDPE/PP tapes having width
of 2.5 mm (tolerance of +10 percent) conforming to IS 6192 and IS
11197 respectively and linear density of 111 tex (1000 denier) for 50
kg sugar bags and 94 tex (850 denier) for 25 kg sugar bags. The
denier of HDPE/PP tape used in themanufacture of woven
fabric/sacks shall be subjected to the following tolerances: a) + 10
percent on individual value, and b) +5 percent on average. The
construction particulars of fabric shall be as given in Table 1.

SACKS
The sacks shall be produced from tubular fabric woven as tube on a
circular loom and cut to the required length.

BOTTOM SEAM

The stitching of bottom seam shall be done with two rows of chain
stitch (see IS 10789). The two rows of stitches shall be separated
from each other by minimum 5 mm and the outer stitch shall be
minimum 8 mm from the outer edge of the sacks. The stitching shall
be done with double fold over seam to a depth of minimum 25 mm,
so that the stitches pass through a minimum of six layers of the
fabric. The number of stitches/dm shall be 14 + 2. The material used
for stitching shall be UV stabilized HDPE/PP tape as used in the fabric
or any other UV stabilized thread/multifilament yarn suitable for the
purpose. The stitching shall be uniform without any loose thread or
knot.

MOUTH

The Completely open mouth of the sack shall be hemmed with a

fold of minimum 5 mm and pcs shall not fray. The loose liner, if
required, shall be inserted inside the sack and shall be hemmed into
the mouth with single hem.
LINER
If Required by the buyer, the unlamented sacks shall be provided
with a loose liner of food de virgin LDPE/LLDPE/HMHDPE/PP
conforming to is 10146 or IS 10910. The mass of nose liner shall be
35 + 2 g. The width of the loose liner shall be at least 20 mm more n
the Specified width of the sack and the length of the liner at least 50
mm more than the specified length of sack. The bottom seam of the
loose liner shall be at least 25 mm from the bottom edge. The liner
shall be free from pin holes (except for air removal holes), patches,
tear, blisters and any other visible defects

Notes
1. The specified dimensions provide for optimum free space of
minimum 20 percent of length when measured along the surface of
the fabric from mouth stitch line of the Sacks up to the surface level
of contents.

2.The mass of sack is based on fabrics weighing 106 g/m2 and 96

g/m2 for Type 1 and Type 2 sacks respectively.(Width after ravelling
= 50 mm, Gauge length = 200 mm. 1N=0.102 kgf)
ASSESSMENT RESULTS:

The following table 2 shows the comparison of the

measured/calculated parameters with the IS standards for sugar
bags as discussed previously, form the market, randomly taken for
