IDM Assignment#1

1. The document contains 5 problems related to irrigation engineering. The first problem calculates the command area of 16,500 sqm for a Persian wheel irrigating at a depth of 8cm over 15 days. 2. The second problem determines the soil moisture content at various depths before irrigation. It then calculates the net water required to reach field capacity. 3. The third problem calculates the gross irrigation depth, number of irrigations, and interval required for tomatoes grown over 5 months in loamy soil.

ASSIGNMENT#1

1. A Persian wheel discharges at the rate of 11,000 litres per hour and works for eight hours
each day. Estimate the area commanded by the water lift if the average depth of irrigation is
8cm and irrigation interval is 15 days.
Given
Discharge of Persian wheel (Q) =11000 litres per hour
Time (t)= 8hours
Irrigation depth (dir.) = 8cm
Irrigation interval (ii) =15days
Required ==>command Area (A)?
Solution
Volume of water with in the 15day =1m3/1000liters×11000liters/hour×8hour/day ×15day
= 1320m3 volume of water available.
 Water required to cover one hectare to a depth of 8cm
=1ha×irrigation depth=10000m2×8cm×1m/100cm= 800m3
Therefore, area irrigated(commanded area) by Persian Wheel can be calculated as
follows.
Commanded area = = =1.65 hectares =16500m2

2. The following data were obtained in determining the soil moisture content at successive
depths in the root zone prior to applying irrigation water:
Depth of sampling weight of moist soil Oven dry weight of soil sample
(cm) sample(gm) (gm)
0-25 134.6 126.82
25-50 136.28 127.95
50-75 122.95 115.32
75-100 110.92 102.64
The bulk density of the soil in the root zone was 1.50 g/cc. The available moisture holding
capacity of the soil was 17.8 cm/m depth. Determine
(i) The moisture content at the different depths in the root zone,
(ii) Moisture content in the root zone at the time of irrigation,
(iii) Net depth of water to be applied to bring the moisture content to field capacity, and

ASSIGNMENT#1

(iv) Gross irrigation requirement at estimated field irrigation efficiency of 70%.

The moisture content at the different depths in the root zone Can be calculated as follows
Moisture content before irrigation for the given soil samples
 × 100
==> Depth water required at root zone = moisture content before irrigation × root zone depth
×bulk density
Depth of root Moisture content before irrigation (%) Depth of water required at root
zone (cm) zone =droot× mc ×bulk density
0-25 =6.13 0.25×6.13×1.5= 2.30

25-50 =6.53 0.25×6.53×1.5=2.44

50-75 = 6.60 0.25×6.60×1.5= 2.47

75-100 = 8.06 0.25×8.06×1.5=3.02

ii) Moisture content in the root zone at the time of irrigation

=2.30cm+2.44cm+2.47cm+3.02cm=10.23cm/m
(iii) Net depth of water to be applied to bring the moisture content to field capacity (irrigation
net requirement)
Net depth water to be applied = moisture holding capacity of the soil –moisture content in the
root zone
=17.8cm-10.23cm = 7.57cm
(iv) Gross irrigation requirement at estimated field irrigation efficiency of 70%.

Gross irrigation = = = 10.8cm

3. Compute the gross depth of water application, the total number of irrigations and the
irrigation interval of tomatoes of 5 months growing period in loamy soil. The irrigation water
need of tomatoes for the whole growing period, estimated month wise is 720mm
Solution
From the table below the approximate net irrigation depth for different soil textural and root
depth have been given. From the table below tomatoes classified under medium rooting crop.
And in loamy soil it has 40mm net irrigation depth.

ASSIGNMENT#1

Approximate net irrigation Depths in mm

Soil textural class Shallow rooting crops Medium rooting Deep rooting crops
crops
Shallow/ sandy soil 15 30 40
Loamy soil 20 40 60
Clayey soil 30 50 70
Therefore gross irrigation depth for tomatoes =720mm/40mm=18mm
Total number of irrigation season =5×30= 150days
Irrigation interval=150/18=8.33days =8days
4. Compute the efficiency of an irrigation system based on the following data: 1800 litres/min
of water is diverted to the farm each day of 24hrs. Each day 0.8ha of maize and 1ha of wheat
are irrigated. The irrigation requirement of maize is 8cm and that of wheat 12cm.
Solution
Efficiency of an irrigation = volume of water required in the root zone divided by .
Volume of water diverted to field
Volume of water diverted =1800liter/ min=(1800×60×24)/1000=2592m3
Volume of water required to irrigate maize =A×d=0.8ha×10000m2/ha×8cm×1m/100cm=640m3
Volume of water required to irrigate wheat= A×d=1ha×10000m2/ha×12cm×1m/100cm=1200m3
Total volume of water to be used by maize and wheat=640m3+1200m3=1840m3

Efficiency of an irrigation system = = 100

=70.99% which is approximately 71%, therefore efficiency of irrigation system is 71%

5. Compute the reservoir storage efficiency for a 24-hr period when 3100 litters/minute of water
are being diverted from the reservoir based on the following data: The rate of inflow into the
reservoir of 4420 litres/minute. S=410 cubic metres (the quantity of to be removed to restore
the initial water level in the reservoir
Solution Inflow Volume (Vi) =4420literes/minute×1m3/1000liters×60minutes/1hr×24hr/day
=6364.8m3/day
out flow Volume (Vout )=3100liters/minute×1m3/1000liters×60minutes/1hr×24hr/day
=4464m3/day and S= 410m3

Reservoir storage Efficiency= ) ×100 = ( ) ×100 =75.4%
